Brazil inflation (IPCA-15) advances 1.17% through November 15
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – As measured by the Broad National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15), the advance of inflation rose 1.17% in the first part of November. The result represents the highest variation for the month since 2002 when the index stood at 2.08%.
Last month, the IPCA-15 stood at 1.20%, and in November 2020, 0.81%. The accumulated figure for the year is 9.57%, and for the 12 months, the inflation forecast is 10.73%, above the 10.34% registered in the immediately previous 12 months. The data were released today (25) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
All groups of services and products surveyed rose in the November forecast. The most significant individual impact on the indicator was gasoline, which was 6.62% more expensive in the month, influencing the result for transportation, with a 2.89% variation, the highest among the surveyed groups.
In the year, gasoline rose 44.83%, and in 12 months, the accumulated increase was 48%.

Transportation by app drivers rose 16.23% in November, after having climbed 11.60% in October. Airline tickets were 6.34% cheaper, after rising 28.76% in September and 34.35% in October.
In the housing group, which rose 1.06%, the most significant contribution came from household gas cylinders, which rose for the 18th consecutive month, 4.34% higher in November. The product has accumulated a 51.05% hike since June 2020.
Electricity prices slowed down and rose 0.93%, after rising 3.91% in October. Besides the readjustment in Goiânia, Brasília and São Paulo, the tariff flag “Escassez Hídrica” (water scarcity) has been in effect since September, adding R$ 14.20 to the electricity bill for every 100 kWh consumed.
The food and beverage group slowed down, rising 0.4% in November, after climbing 1.38% in October. The main increases were in tomatoes (14.02%), potatoes (14.13%), onions (7%), chicken cuts (3.07%), and cheese (2.88%).
On the other hand, there was a drop in the price of beef (-1.15%), long-life milk (-3.97%), and fruit (-1.92%).
In health and personal care, personal hygiene items (1.65%) and pharmaceutical products (1.13%) were the main influences behind the 0.80% hike in the month’s advance. Clothing climbed 1.59%, education was stable at 0.01%, and household items were 1.53% more expensive.
Regions
According to the IBGE, all the areas surveyed witnessed a hike in the November IPCA-15. The highest variation was in Goiânia, up 1.86%, boosted by the readjustment in electricity (10.93%) and gasoline (5.87%). The lowest inflation was measured in the metropolitan region of Belém, which rose 0.76%, with a 2.05% drop in electricity and a 9.3% drop in açaí.
The IPCA-15 differs from the IPCA by the collection period, from the 16th of the previous month to the 15th of the reference month, and by the regions surveyed. The target population for the IPCA-15 is families with incomes of 1 to 40 minimum wages, residents in the metropolitan areas of Belém, Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Curitiba, and Porto Alegre, in addition to the Federal District and the municipality of Goiânia.
