Key Facts

Q2 2026 GDP growth. The Peru economy expanded approximately 3.0% in the second quarter, according to official INEI data.

Domestic demand surge. Internal consumption and investment grew 6.6% in Q1 2026, powering construction, commerce, and non-primary manufacturing.

Mining rebound. The mining and hydrocarbons sector grew 2.6%, led by iron’s 181.1% statistical recovery and higher copper and tin output.

El Niño drag. The weather phenomenon subtracted roughly 2 percentage points from May GDP alone, hurting agriculture and fishing.

Full-year outlook. The Central Reserve Bank of Peru projects 3.2% growth for 2026, backed by a 43.7% jump in mining investment.

The Peru economy grew approximately 3.0% in the second quarter of 2026, sustained by a powerful surge in domestic demand and a sharp rebound in mining, even as an unruly El Niño punished agriculture and fishing.

What is driving the Peru economy right now

Domestic demand climbed 6.6% in Q1, making it the undisputed engine of growth. Construction led the charge as public and private projects repaired infrastructure damaged by earlier coastal El Niño flooding.

Commerce and non-primary manufacturing also posted solid gains. Household consumption stayed resilient, supported by easing inflation and steady credit growth across the country.

For foreign investors and expats, this domestic strength signals a maturing consumer market less dependent on raw commodity swings. Retail chains, shopping centers, and service industries are expanding beyond Lima into fast-growing secondary cities like Arequipa and Trujillo.

Mining stages a dramatic comeback

The mining and hydrocarbons sector expanded 2.6% after three consecutive months of decline. Iron production skyrocketed 181.1%, a statistical rebound after Shougang’s operational incident in May 2025 crushed output a year earlier.

Copper extraction rose 2.6%, with majors Antamina and Cerro Verde increasing volumes. Tin output jumped 15.0% thanks to expanded operations at Minsur, Peru’s dominant tin producer.

Shougang is a Chinese-owned iron miner operating in southern Peru, while Antamina and Cerro Verde rank among the world’s largest copper mines. Their recovery reinforces Peru’s position as the globe’s second-biggest copper supplier, a crucial fact for portfolio managers tracking the green-energy metals boom.

El Niño hits fields and fisheries

The El Niño phenomenon subtracted roughly 2 percentage points from May GDP alone. Irregular rainfall and warmer coastal waters slashed crop yields and disrupted fish landings, dragging down primary manufacturing.

Agriculture is still projected to expand 3.1% for the full year, but the second quarter bore the brunt of weather damage. Fruit and vegetable exports still approached US$3,000 million between January and May, sustained by high-value avocados, berries, and grapes.

This resilience matters for international buyers who depend on Peruvian superfoods and fresh produce. While volume dips are painful for individual growers, the export sector’s diversification across microclimates and products helps cushion economy-wide shocks.

Central bank and investment outlook

The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) forecasts 3.2% growth for all of 2026. The first quarter already delivered 3.5%, and the bank points to a 43.7% jump in mining investment as a forward driver.

Major projects like Ferrobamba and Tía María are advancing, fueled by high global metal prices. However, our reporting has shown that community tensions and permitting bottlenecks remain persistent risks to project timelines.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) sees non-primary sectors continuing to carry momentum through year-end.

Tía María, a long-delayed copper project in the Arequipa region, and Ferrobamba, an iron and copper venture, represent billions in committed capital. Their progress signals that community tensions and permitting bottlenecks, while still present, are not freezing the project pipeline.

What this means for expats, investors, and tourists

For expatriates living in Peru, steady 3%-plus growth typically translates into stable employment markets and improving urban services, though coastal climate disruptions can raise short-term food prices. The construction boom also means more modern housing and office stock in Lima’s prime districts.

Foreign investors should watch the interplay between mining investment and domestic consumption. A 43.7% surge in mining capital expenditure points to confidence in long-term metals demand, while the 6.6% domestic demand jump confirms that Peru’s internal market can sustain returns even when commodity prices wobble.

Tourists are unlikely to feel direct effects from quarterly GDP shifts, but the infrastructure repairs underway after El Niño flooding aim to restore roads and bridges in popular destinations like the northern beaches and highland archaeological sites. Travelers should check local conditions during the rainy season.

What happens next for the Peru economy

Economists will closely monitor third-quarter data to see if the El Niño drag fades as expected. A return to normal weather patterns would allow agriculture and fishing to recover, potentially adding upward pressure to the full-year growth estimate.

The BCRP’s 3.2% target rests heavily on mining investment materializing on schedule. Any delays at Tía María or Ferrobamba would test the central bank’s optimism, though the diversified domestic demand base provides a cushion that previous commodity cycles lacked.

For readers tracking Latin American markets, Peru’s ability to grow at 3% despite a severe climate shock demonstrates the structural improvements made over two decades of macroeconomic discipline. The country’s fiscal accounts remain among the region’s strongest, giving policymakers room to respond if global conditions sour.
