Travel Companies Halt Trips to Mexico’s Chiapas Amid Violence Surge

Tour operators in France, Belgium, and the UK have stopped trips to Chiapas, Mexico, amidst escalating violence.

This decision comes in response to the growing threat from organized crime in the area.

Anfitriones Turísticos de Chiapas (ATC), a tourism agency since 1984, reports severe disruptions in tourism over the past three months.

Tourists have faced dangerous situations, including navigating through gunfire and stone-throwing incidents.

ATC highlights that organized crime groups are extorting and threatening visitors. These criminal activities are significantly impacting one of Mexico’s key tourist destinations.

Consequently, agencies that ATC represents have ceased all tours to the Lacandona area. This decision reflects the severity of the situation and the need to ensure tourist safety.

El País, a Spanish newspaper, reveals that the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) are vying for control of this region.

Even Guatemalan authorities have reported incidents involving the CJNG.
