And because tomorrow, Thursday 9 July, is a state holiday (Revolução Constitucionalista) with office shutdowns Friday in the capital, tonight drinks like a Friday — you can stay for the encore and still dance afterwards.

Money & How Paying Works
The comanda: at most bars and clubs you’re handed a paper or plastic tab card at the door; every drink is marked on it and you pay everything at a cashier on the way out. Guard it with your life — losing it usually means paying a hefty flat fine. At some old-school spots like Ó do Borogodó you instead pay per round at a single cashier, so keep small cash handy.
Couvert artístico is a per-person live-music cover (think R$15-85 depending on the act) added to your bill — it is not a scam, it pays the band. The little bread-and-olives plate (couvert) is optional; wave it away if you don’t want it.
Cards and Pix rule: almost everywhere takes debit/credit and many venues accept Pix, but carry R$50-100 in notes for street snacks, small botecos and emergencies.
Tipping: 10% service (‘serviço’) is usually added to the bill automatically — check before adding more. It’s technically optional but everyone pays it; no extra tip expected beyond that.
Getting Home Safe
The metro runs from 4:40 am until midnight — tonight (Wednesday) plan to catch your last train by around 11:30 pm; boarding after midnight, where possible, is only for travel on the same line. Note lines 1, 2 and 3 have run 24 hours on Saturday nights as an experiment — but not on Wednesdays.
After midnight use 99 or Uber, never a street-hailed cab. Order the car from inside the venue, wait by the door or with security, and check the plate before getting in. Both apps are cheap by European standards.
Expect surge pricing at closing time (2-5 am, and bigger tonight because of the holiday). Waiting 15-20 minutes inside or walking with friends to a busy, well-lit corner one block over often halves the fare.
Keep it boring: phone in front pocket, flash it as little as possible on the street, carry one card plus small cash, and leave the passport at home (a photo of it is fine). Snatch-theft of phones is the main risk — hold it away from the kerb.
Stick to the lit, busy spines (Augusta, Aspicuelta, the venue block), move between districts by app car rather than long night walks, and if someone demands your phone, hand it over — things are replaceable. Millions go out in São Paulo every night without drama.
Frequently Asked Questions
What time do people actually go out?
Late. Dinner 9 pm, bars fill 10-11 pm, clubs are empty before midnight and peak 1-3 am. Tonight everything skews even later and fuller because Thursday 9 July is a state holiday.
How does paying work at the door?
You’ll either buy a ticket online (clubs, shows — often cheaper in advance) or get a comanda tab card at the door. Drinks go on the card; you settle at a cashier before you leave. A couvert artístico (live-music cover) may be added where there’s a band.
I don’t speak Portuguese — will I cope?
Yes. Point at the menu, learn ‘uma cerveja, por favor’ and ‘a conta’ (the bill), and use the venue’s Instagram DM or WhatsApp to book — Brazilian venues live on Instagram, and staff at Blue Note, Skye and the Vila Madalena bars are used to foreigners.
