Noticeable Decline in Popularity for Brazil’s Lula During 2023

A recent survey by PoderData showed a decrease in Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s approval rating in 2023.

It fell from 52% in January to 46% by December. This 6% drop is significant, indicating a change in public opinion. Simultaneously, disapproval rose by 5%, from 39% to 44%.

These changes occurred over the year. Every two to three months, PoderData conducted surveys.

While monthly changes were small, the yearly trend is clear. It shows a decline in support for President Lula’s government.

PoderData, part of Poder360, carried out five major surveys in 2023. This effort was unique, covering the whole year. It helps us understand how people’s views have shifted.

The December survey was extensive. It involved 2,500 people from various regions and backgrounds.

This diverse group came from 244 cities in all 27 Brazilian states. The survey used phone calls to reach people. Both cell phones and landlines were included.

The survey’s goal was to get a balanced view. It aimed to represent different ages, genders, incomes, and education levels.

The process required making many phone calls. Sometimes, over 100,000 calls were needed to get a fair sample.

A steady loss of approval

Looking at the surveys together gives a clearer picture. They show a consistent trend.

President Lula’s government has seen a slight but steady loss of approval. At the same time, there has been a small increase in negative views.

The year-long data is particularly telling. It shows a noticeable drop in popularity for Lula’s administration. This decline goes beyond small errors in the survey.

A closer look at who changed their opinion is revealing. The government lost support among groups crucial to Lula’s election win in 2022.

These include women and lower-income individuals. President Lula was elected with just over half the votes in 2022.

However, his current support is less than that. The year ends with him not fulfilling his goal of uniting the country. In fact, he has lost support from some who initially backed him.
