Latin America’s Top Sub Debuts at Tropicalex 2023

The Brazilian Navy uses Tropicalex 2023 for the operational debut of the S-BR Riachuelo submarine.

Built by ICN, this annual exercise kicked off on September 18. It spans the maritime area between Rio de Janeiro and Salvador and concludes on September 28.

The exercise focuses on upgrading Brazil’s naval vessels, subs, and aircraft readiness. It also tests the Riachuelo against targets such as the Tikuna submarine.

In Tropicalex 2023, the Navy set up a task force led by the ship Atlântico and various frigates. Tikuna and Riachuelo submarines also joined, along with seven aircraft.

Squadron VF-1 contributes two AF-1 Skyhawks to the drill. Moreover, five helicopters participate, including two SH-16 Seahawks and an AH-15B Super Cougar.
