Chile’s Foreign Minister, Alberto van Klaveren, condemned the use of force against civilians and called for an immediate halt to all violent actions.
In response, Gil Artzyeli, Israel’s ambassador to Chile, deemed the comments as unfortunate. He asserted that Israel has both the right and the obligation to defend itself.
Adding to the diplomatic tension, Chilean President Gustavo Boric took to social media. He prompted international leaders to not remain silent about the ongoing issues in Palestine.
The recent discord between Chile and Israel highlights broader issues surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Chile has a history of upholding human rights, which strongly influences its stance on international conflicts, including this one.
On the other hand, Israel emphasizes its need for self-defense, particularly against groups it considers extremist.
The diplomatic tension is not merely a bilateral issue; it has implications for future interactions between Chile and Israel.
It also contributes to the larger global debate on the validity and limits of Israel’s defensive actions.
Furthermore, Israel is concerned about how this episode and similar incidents may influence international perception of its right to self-defense.
Chile’s position could potentially act as a catalyst, prompting other Latin American countries to reevaluate their relations with Israel.
In conclusion, both countries will likely tread carefully in the coming days. Given its already sensitive nature, they’ll aim to prevent escalating the situation further.
Background
Chile’s Foreign Minister, Alberto van Klaveren, condemned using force against civilians and called for an immediate halt to all violent actions.
This isn’t the first tension between Chile and Israel since President Gabriel Boric took office in 2022.
Last September, Boric delayed accepting Israeli Ambassador Gil Artzyeli’s credentials. He postponed their meeting to October to mourn a young Palestinian killed by Israeli forces.
The initial meeting was set for June 15 at Chile’s government headquarters, La Moneda Palace.
There, Boric was to accept Israel’s chosen ambassador officially. The delay came in response to the death of 17-year-old Ugay Trad Salah, who was killed in the West Bank.
Chilean Foreign Minister Antonia Urrejola quickly arranged a follow-up meeting with Artzyeli. The aim was to explain the situation and keep Israeli-Chilean relations stable.
