Cold Front Considered ‘Historic’ May Lead to Snow in Southern São Paulo State

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A mass of polar air that will hit Brazil this week could make it snow in places not used to the phenomenon, such as the state of São Paulo, MetSul reported yesterday.

The Meteorological Institute said the polar air mass has the potential to be a “historic cold and snow event”. Other states that may be affected by low temperatures are Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná.

MetSul’s simulations show the presence of snow in regions where this weather is common, but elsewhere the phenomenon may occur for the first time in decades.

MetSul points out that “snow probability is very high”, but that only in the next few days will it have more accurate projections.

“What can and should be reported is that it should snow; the fact that it could be strong in some places is not ruled out, and that the phenomenon could reach points less familiar with the phenomenon,” said the Institute.

The city of São Paulo is expected to experience 14-degree Celsius (57 Fahrenheit) high temperatures on Friday and more intense cold on the weekend.
