Paraty International Literary Festival will take place in November in Brazil

The organizers of the Paraty International Literary Festival (Flip), Brazil’s biggest literary event, informed today that its 21st edition will take place between November 22 and 26 in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro.

The event, traditionally held in July, was affected by the pandemic and had two virtual editions and a face-to-face edition in December 2022.

Once the party was over last year, the organizers explained that the new date began to be awaited, with frequent questions about its realization in the traditional month of July, which could not happen in 2023.

“We know that there is an expectation that the Festival will once again occupy the winter vacations [in Brazil], a time that was taken as low season by Paraty residents, which is why we set this period since our first experience,” noted Flip’s artistic director, Mauro Munhoz.

“With the normalization of the rules for cultural promotion and other public policies for the sector, we have the prospect of resuming a multi-year plan to work on subsequent editions and meet this demand”, he added.

This year, the event organizers explained that they had created Flip-se Hospitality, an ‘engagement’ channel for the public interested in participating in Flip to ask questions and receive first-hand information about dates, accommodation, tickets, and other experiences.

Since its first edition in 2003, Flip recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of the State of Rio de Janeiro, has promoted encounters over the five days of the festival, just part of a much wider cultural manifestation.

Besides bringing together personalities from the world of culture and literature for conversations, lectures, and book launches, among other activities, Flip promotes actions to encourage reading and the development of new readers with an educational program for children and young people throughout the year, culminating in the Flipinha and Flipzona celebrations.

Flip has hosted authors of various origins, trends, and languages.

Leading international names include Svetlana Aleksievitch, Toni Morrison, J. M. Coetzee, Teresa Cárdenas, Salman Rushdie, Anne Enright, Jonathan Safran Foer, Nadine Gordimer, Karl Ove Knausgård, Ian McEwan, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Amos Oz, Paul B. Preciado and, most recently, Annie Ernaux.
