The first Southern Common Market (Mercosur) Film Festival opened yesterday in Argentina, a cultural initiative promoting artistic activity in the region.
The proposal is organized by the Ministry of Culture of Argentina and the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (Incaa) in collaboration with the Specialized Meeting of Film and Audiovisual Authorities of Mercosur (Recam).
It will run until Sunday, May 28, according to a press release from the Ministry of Culture.
The activity offers a federal itinerary that includes screenings in different cities, among them Buenos Aires (the federal capital), Mendoza (west), Ushuaia (south), Oberá (northeast), and Villa María (center).
The contents are “current” and “of regional production, many of them recognized at international film festivals.

The proposal promotes balance among the Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay), gender parity, and themes that promote the region’s identity”, the official information stated.
The exhibition is part of the management of the first semester of 2023, in which Argentina holds the pro tempore presidency of the bloc, and “aims to promote audiovisual works created in the region and highlight the talent and diversity of film productions that are generated in the bloc,” said the Ministry of Culture.
The program is made up of fiction and documentary feature films, which will be screened together with a short film in each block, including “El juicio”, an Argentine film by director Ulises de la Orden, premiered at the last edition of the Berlin International Film Festival.
Also on view will be the film “Argentina, 1985”, by director Santiago Mitre, nominated at the last Oscar Awards in the Best Foreign Film category; the Paraguayan work “Jubentú”, by Ricardo Morínigo; and the Brazilian “Saudade fez morada aquí dentro”, by Haroldo Borges, winner of the Astor Piazzolla Award for Best Feature Film in the International Competition at the last edition of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival.
The Ministry of Culture explained that Recam comprises the film and audiovisual organizations of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, together with the associated states of Bolivia and Chile. On this occasion, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador are participating as special guests.
