UK Christian doctor dismissed for refusing to use transgender pronouns speaks out

Dr. David Mackereth, a British Christian doctor, was dismissed from his job in 2019 for refusing to address transgender patients with their preferred pronouns.

Mackereth, who only recently discussed his case publicly during an interview with Fox News, argued that such incidents are not uncommon.

In the interview, the 60-year-old former emergency room doctor called upon his colleagues in the medical field and individuals of faith to confront gender ideology and uphold truth.

Mackereth recounted his dismissal, explaining that, as a Christian, he couldn’t in good conscience use transgender pronouns that did not align with a patient’s biological sex.

His employer viewed Mackereth’s refusal as potential “harassment” under the UK Equality Act 2010.

After his dismissal, Mackereth lodged a claim with the Employment Tribunal against his former employer on grounds of religious discrimination.

However, three months later, the tribunal ruled against Mackereth, stating that his Bible-based beliefs about gender were “incompatible with human dignity.”

Reacting to this judgment, Mackereth expressed his disappointment with the Equality Act. He said, “If Christianity is not protected by the Equality Act here in the UK, then surely the Equality Act is useless.”

In May 2022, the Employment Appeal Tribunal partially overturned the initial verdict. Still, the court upheld that Mackereth’s dismissal was warranted.

The doctor is receiving legal counsel from the Christian Legal Centre, a private firm specializing in defending religious freedom.

Mackereth remains adamant that the so-called “transgender ideology” must be confronted, arguing that his case is significant for upholding free speech.

He emphasized, “As a Christian doctor, I put truth at the foundation of what I do.”

Mackereth firmly believes that sex change is impossible, stating, “It is simply impossible for a person to change sex. So I can’t agree with that.”
