Trump promises to end citizenship for children of illegal immigrants

Former US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (30) that if he is elected in 2024, he will end the granting of automatic citizenship to children born on US territory whose parents are illegal immigrants.

The measure would also affect tourists whose children are born in the US.

In a campaign video (watch it here), Trump stated that the measure is aimed at “protecting the border” of the country.

The Republican has stated that he will instruct federal agencies that the automatic granting of US citizenship will only apply when one of the parents is a US citizen or legal permanent resident.

Without the grant of citizenship, children would be prevented from receiving “passports, Social Security numbers, or being eligible for certain taxpayer-funded social benefits.”

“[The measure] will discourage more immigrants from coming and will encourage many of the foreigners that Joe Biden [US President] let into our country illegally to return to their home countries,” Trump said.

Th so-called citizenship by primogeniture is part of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1868.

The Amendment granted citizenship to all persons “born or naturalized in the United States,” including formerly enslaved people.

The text was interpreted as applying to all born on US territory regardless of whether their parents resided in the country regularly.
