Uruguay’s national labor union announced a four-hour general strike on June 27, 2023, to commemorate the last military coup that occurred fifty years ago, leading to a dictatorship.

The decision has drawn criticism from President Luis Lacalle Pou’s government, stating that a strike to commemorate a coup negatively impacts the people. Despite this, the unions have the right to strike.

The general strike, organized by the PIT-CNT, will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The union movement will mobilize in La Teja, starting from the Ancap refinery, which holds symbolic significance as the place where the strike against the dictatorship began.

A rally with speeches will be held at the corner of Carlos María Ramírez and Carlos Tellier.

The measure was approved by the Representative Board of the PIT-CNT, and it aims to highlight the historical importance of the date and the struggle against the civil-military regime at the premises of the “glass union,” setting the stage for the general strike.
