Machu Picchu to operate at full capacity despite expected protests

Machu Picchu, the renowned Inca citadel, plans to operate normally this month, despite the anticipated protests, with a daily visitor limit of 4,044 people.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Culture, up to 1,000 same-day tickets will be available on-site, while the remainder can be acquired via a digital platform.

Ticket sales will be carried out in Machu Picchu Pueblo, where the archaeological site is situated.

The ticket office will operate from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the district’s Cultural Center.

The Ministry of Culture has reiterated its dedication to ensuring a satisfactory visitor experience at Machu Picchu and intends to continue discussions with union representatives, authorities, and civil society.

The dialogue aims to improve the ticketing system following reports that tickets were sold out until August.

Given the summer vacation period in the northern hemisphere and Peru’s national holidays on July 28th and 29th, July and August are peak seasons for domestic and foreign tourists visiting Peru’s primary attraction.

It is important to note that from July 19th, numerous union and social organizations have scheduled protests, expected to peak around Peru’s Independence Day celebrations.

Previously, Machu Picchu had to close for several weeks during anti-government protests when locals blocked access to the site.
