Sinaloa Cartel leader and main generator of violence in southeastern Mexico captured

Mexican authorities captured Héctor “F”, alias “El 15”, identified as one of the leaders of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel and the main generator of violence in southeastern Mexico, the Attorney General’s Office of the state of Quintana Roo announced yesterday.

In a statement, the agency indicated that the drug lord was arrested in compliance with an arrest warrant during an operation in the city of Guamúchil, Sinaloa.

“The arrest was achieved thanks to intelligence, field, and cabinet work carried out by the Coordination Group for the Construction of Peace and Security in Quintana Roo,” the source said.

“El 15” was transferred to the municipality of Benito Juarez (Quintana Roo) and later to the Social Reinsertion Center (Cereso), where he was detained and placed at the disposal of the authorities, which will define his legal situation in the next few hours.

The Mexican authorities offered up to one million pesos (almost US$57,000) to anyone who provided information leading to his location.

However, no one was rewarded due to the authorities’ intelligence work.

According to a recent United Nations report, the Sinaloa Cartel is one of the criminal groups with the most international presence and figures in the U.S. market.

Analysts agree that the increase in drug-related violence in South and Central America has been driven by the dispute between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Cartel – New Generation in Mexico.
