Colombia’s Conservative Party could go into opposition

The Conservative Party of Colombia has announced that, after the government reshuffle carried out the day before by President Gustavo Petro, it will open a consultation process to decide whether to continue with its support to the Executive or move to the opposition bench.

“We are going to open the consultation process, and surely next week we will have that national directory to make decisions”, said the president of the formation, Efrain Cepeda, who lamented that Petro has practically “kicked them out” of the Government.

The Colombian president reshuffled his cabinet on Wednesday and dismissed ministers and officials of the Conservative, Liberal, and Union for the People parties, putting an end to the coalition government in place since August, when he took office.

“I think that the opinion today is of moderation, tranquility, a decision with a cool head, consulted with our benches, and if they insist that they kicked us out, then they kicked us out”, said Cepeda, according to the Colombian radio station RCN Radio.

President Petro already defended on Wednesday, after the expulsion of seven ministers, that the decision was aimed at “consolidating the government program”, which had been hindered by internal differences within the coalition.
