Unemployment in Chile up 15.2%; stands at 8% between November and January last year

Unemployment in Chile stood at 8 percent in the mobile quarter between November 2022 and January 2023, the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported yesterday, Monday.

The reported figure signified an increase of 0.7 percentage points in 12 months, the third annual increase after continuous decreases since February-April 2021.

The increase was due to an increase in the labor force (4.3 percent) over employed persons (3.4 percent).

Meanwhile, the number of unemployed people increased by 15.2 percent, with an incidence of those who were unemployed and those who were looking for work for the first time.

According to INE, the increase in employed persons was influenced by both women and men.

The sectors that contributed to the growth were accommodation, food service, transportation, agriculture, and fishing, while by occupational category, there was an increase in formal, informal, and employer employees.

The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, announced last January a package of seven measures seeking economic security to Chilean families by considering direct monetary contributions.

Chile closed 2022 with accumulated inflation of 12.8 percent, the highest in three decades.
