Chilean president expresses concern as ongoing storm hampers rescue efforts in some areas

Chilean President Gabriel Boric expressed his regret on Tuesday over the difficulties in reaching certain territories for rescue operations.

These areas remain isolated due to the ongoing storm that has been affecting the central-southern region of the country since last Thursday and has resulted in at least two fatalities.

During his visit to the commune of Alto Biobío, located approximately 600 kilometers south of the capital Santiago, Boric highlighted its status as the most isolated territory due to heavy rainfall.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to restore essential services promptly.

Boric stated that a 24-hour deadline has been set to restore drinking water services in the area, while a 48-hour timeframe has been established to restore electricity supply to the commune.

According to the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response, the storm front, which began on Thursday, has affected regions from Valparaíso in the center to Biobío in the south, including the capital, Santiago.

Tragically, two individuals have lost their lives, and four people remain missing.

The disaster has impacted 13,379 individuals, with 1,632 seeking refuge in shelters, 12,314 experiencing isolation, and 1,488 houses being destroyed.

President Boric expressed concern for those affected by the storm and emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by the ongoing situation.

Efforts are underway to provide assistance and restore vital services in the affected regions.
