Chile approves law that will sanction adulteration in wine production

The Chilean Congress approved on Tuesday a bill that will sanction those who adulterate wine production, a country that is one of the most important wine producers in the world, informed the Ministry of Agriculture of the southern nation.

“This law prohibits a real counterfeit, a trap that is using table grapes with vinified grapes, which generates a bad price for producers and low and bad traceability of our wines and spirits,” said Agriculture Minister Esteban Valenzuela this day

“(It is) a wonderful project, initiated by cross-cutting parliamentarians from the Maule region (center), have caused the new alcohol law. This contemplates a high penalty, there can be seizures, up to the closure of the companies that fail to comply with this new regulation, “added the official.

The deputy national director of Chile’s Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG), Andrea Collao, added that from now on the South American country will have a much more protected sector.

“As a Service, we will be able to provide more certainty and security, with the application of strong sanctions for infringement of the regulations, since we will have greater powers,” she said.

The regulation will establish that SAG’s regional directors will be able to determine the destination of the elements or inputs used to commit the infraction and the products resulting from it, when the seized elements are used for a purpose other than that for which they were used to commit the infraction.

This power will make it possible to order, for example, the distillation of confiscated products.

The bill, approved unanimously in both chambers of the Chilean Congress, must be promulgated by the country’s president, Gabriel Boric, to enter into force as law.

According to figures released earlier this month by the Wines of Chile trade association, 74 percent of the wine produced by the South American country was exported in 2022.

Likewise, last year, 22.8 million glasses of Chilean wine were consumed per day in the world.
