At only 33, Freitas isn’t just wealthy; he’s also the innovative mind behind Character.AI. This chatbot platform offers more than just automated responses.
It allows users to engage in conversations with AI versions of famous personalities like Elon Musk and Tony Stark.
Freitas graduated from the University of São Paulo in 2011. Soon after, he honed his skills at Google and Microsoft.
He focused on improving the Bing search engine at Microsoft before making a daring career move. In 2021, he co-founded Character.AI with Noam Shazeer, who serves as the CEO.
The company quickly gained traction. It initially rolled out c.ai+, a $10 monthly subscription service that speeds up message delivery.
Character.AI then hit a milestone with a $1 billion valuation. Talks are in the early stages for additional funding that could push the company’s value over $5 billion.
Character.AI is not just limited to one-on-one chats. It recently introduced the Character Group Chat feature, adding a social dimension to the platform.
Users can now create group chats with a mix of AI and human participants. They can even simulate conversations among renowned scientists or mythological gods.
Initially available for c.ai+ subscribers, the company plans to extend this to the general public.

The startup’s user base is impressive, boasting nearly 30 million active users globally and about 7 million in the U.S. alone.
With its expanding services and growing popularity, Character.AI is well on its way to becoming a cornerstone in the AI industry.
This progress is remarkable, given that it faced competition from other tech giants like Snapchat and Meta, which also offer AI chat features.
Despite these competitors, Character.AI stands out for its unique features and significant investor backing.
After an earlier funding round that generated $150 million, the company continues attracting users and investors.
The startup’s estimated lifetime revenue from in-app purchases stands at $1.3 million, underscoring its growing appeal.
