The number of students aged 40 or more entering Brazilian universities has almost tripled in the last ten years, between 2012 and 2021, according to data from the Census of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education (MEC).
The increase, 171.1%, was much higher than the variation in the total number of entrants: 43.1%.
Among the causes, specialists point out, mainly the expansion of distance learning courses (DL) and the economic crisis, which forced many to recalculate their route in the job market.
