Law Setting 30-day Deadline for Cancer Diagnosis Sanctioned in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Vice President Hamilton Mourão sanctioned a law providing that tests for cancer diagnosis must be performed by the Unified Health System (SUS) within 30 days from the doctor’s first suspicion.

The measure is based on the fact that the time for identification of the disease impacts the treatment and the patient’s chance of being cured. (Photo: Internet Reproduction)

The measure was published yesterday, October 31st in the Federal Gazette. It was signed on Wednesday by Mourão when the vice president was still in office on the occasion of President Jair Bolsonaro’s trip to Asia and the Middle East.

The measure changes Law 12.732/2012 that provides 60 days between the diagnosis and the start of cancer treatment in SUS patients.

The text was passed by the Senate on October 16th and is based on the fact that the time for identification of the disease impacts the treatment and the patient’s chance of being cured.
