Bars in Rio de Janeiro: seven addresses on the waterfront to enjoy the summer
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – From Leme to Pontal, trendy kiosks on Rio’s promenades offer good food betting on menus signed by famous chefs. Check out seven cool attractions on the Rio waterfront.
When he was invited to sign the menu of the chain’s kiosk in Ipanema (there are six units along the waterfront), Chef Pedro Benoliel was filled with pride when he learned that his creations would be tasted and exhibited in Rio’s most significant postcard.
“It’s a pleasurable experience, with freshness, flavor, and comfort food. It has the DNA of the Classic and ‘carioquice’ (Rio’s innate flair)”, said the chef, who presents cooking shows on the Food Network.
The suggestion is the “octopus pomodorine” for R$146 (US$28), served with potato, vegetables, aïoli, parsley and herbs, dish harmonized with the house drink: the refreshing “postinho” (R$44), made with vodka, purple grape, basil, and lemon juice.

The result of the union of three friends, Pedro de Lamare, David Zylbersztajn, and Luiz Carlos Nabuco, the space brings to the boardwalk the experience of the partners ahead of the renowned Gula Gula and Rubayat. The menu has 12 sections, ranging from appetizers to dishes to share, signed by chef Lelena Cesar. “de Lamare intends to have gastronomy as a form of warmth and affection. A plural place in every sense,” says Pedro de Lamare, one of the partners.
The house tips are the “jambalaya rice” – fried rice with shrimp, chicken, pork belly, shrimp, and mussels (R$62,00); and the whole baked fish with sour rice, french bean salad, and farofa (R$198). There are also sandwiches and dessert options, paired with drinks such as the “Praia Vermelha” (R$34), made with vodka, grenadine, passion fruit, sour mix, and orange bitter.

MIRANTE DA ROCINHA PÉ NA AREIA (ROCINHA’S BELVEDERE AT THE BEACH)
It went down the slopes of Rocinha and landed on the beach. The kiosk is a mix of tribes, uniting the asphalt and the favela with drinks by Rodrigo Jesus and gastronomy by Chef Glimário. Favela residents operate the kiosk, which features live music in several styles. “We want to raise the flag of Rocinha, break taboos, prove that the favela knows how to entertain. Embrace the community’s public and also bring the neighborhood public, tourists. We want to generate a democratic space like the beach already is,” explains Renan Monteiro, one of the partners.

Opened in 2020, Barthô, headed by gastronomic consultant Deborah Manfroi, a pupil of chef José Hugo Celidônio, has novelties for this summer, such as the dishes in the “refresh yourself” category, like the tuna tartare with green apple, balsamic caramel, and capers (R$54), the chef’s Peruvian-style ceviche with dried corn, coconut milk, and spices (R$56), and a burrata with pesto sauce and arugula salad (R$36).
In addition, the kiosk also brings a new version of the famous pink sunset drink, this time with tangerine tonic, gin, and Sicilian lemon foam (R$49). “We are betting on more refreshing dishes for the summer and foams when it comes to drinks,” explains Deborah.

Inaugurated in 2021, this is the first kiosk on the Rio de Janeiro waterfront focused on art and sustainability. The 4 square meters are an open-air art gallery, a mini stage, a web studio, a cultural center, and a bar: “The proposal is to bring culture in the most varied aspects, from an exhibition that unites architecture and sustainability about the rising sea levels to samba presentations exalting Rio de Janeiro”, explains Marcos Wagner, partner of the house.

QUIOSQUE DA CÉLIA (CÉLIA’S KIOSK)
Reopened with a pet park infrastructure, the first one in Brazil, “Quiosque da Célia” (Célia’s Kiosk) offers activities for four-legged friends every weekend. The space offers dressage classes, breed meetings, and other activities for owners and their furry friends. To check the calendar, check Coveli’s social media.

For the late afternoon, the tip is to go up to the terrace of the Boteco. The house charges a R$35 couvert but does not require a minimum consumption for the client to enjoy the mesmerizing view of the Ipanema and Leblon beaches and Dois Irmãos hill, with the starry floor formed by the illuminated houses of the Vidigal favela.
