Argentina’s Sweeping Economic Reforms: 50,000 Public Sector Jobs Cut

Because of the economic crisis, President Javier Milei announced major spending cuts at the Tenth Latin American Business Forum in Buenos Aires.

Starting in December, his administration launched major economic reforms, including the dismissal of 50,000 public workers under broader austerity measures.

Milei attributed these drastic changes to a challenging fiscal situation inherited from previous administrations.

His government has reduced public expenditure by seven percentage points of GDP, a stark contrast to the minimal adjustments by prior leaders, which he deemed ineffective.

“We stepped into a disaster,” Milei asserted, highlighting the dire conditions at his term’s start.

Furthermore, the president sharply criticized the Chamber of Deputies for proposing a pension reform that could increase government spending.

He firmly stated his intent to veto any policies that threaten fiscal stability.

Milei said, ‘Since December 10, we halved ministries and plan to cut 75,000 contract jobs, 25,000 already dismissed.’

This decisive action aims to streamline operations and minimize governmental waste.

Milei cut discretionary provincial funds and public works, sparking backlash from political and social groups.

He claims significant progress in economic stabilization, security, and corruption eradication within six months, igniting vigorous debates.

Amid these reforms, Argentina grapples with a 289.4% annual inflation and an 8.4% economic activity drop in March.

These figures underscore the urgency and importance of Milei’s policies, which are vital for Argentina’s economic recovery and future stability.
