Argentina Raises $875 Million in First 5G Auction

Argentina has successfully conducted its first auction for the 5G radio spectrum.

The National Communications Agency, known as Enacom, reported revenue of over $875 million from the event.

In Buenos Aires, telecom giants Claro, Telecom Argentina, and Movistar actively participated.

These companies have now secured the rights to provide 5G services for the next two decades.

Sergio Massa, Argentina’s Minister of Economy, attended the auction. He highlighted the importance of high-speed internet for both business and social interactions.

Massa also mentioned the fiscal benefits. “We expect nearly $900 million in the coming weeks. This will help meet our financial goals,” he said.

Enacom released details of the spectrum sale. A total of 250 MHz was sold, divided into two large blocks of 100 MHz and a smaller one of 50 MHz.

Claro bought one 100 MHz block, Telecom Argentina got the other, and Telefonica secured the 50 MHz block. The total revenue from these sales was $875,091,000.

Massa looked to the future with optimism. “This auction paves the way for competition among the telecom companies,” he noted.

“Each company now needs to invest over $1 billion in building infrastructure. This will create jobs and increase private investment in Argentina.”

“It will also lead to better and cheaper internet services for the people.”

Claudio Ambrosini, Enacom’s President, also shared positive views. “The auction went well,” he stated.

“Companies plan to set up about 1,000 radio bases in the coming 16 months. The first area to benefit will be industrial sectors.”

Ambrosini said all companies showed satisfaction with the auction’s outcome.
