Daily Brief

Brazil are back. A 3-0 win over Haiti last night, with two from Matheus Cunha and one from Vinícius Júnior, sends the side top of its group.

It sets up a decider. Brazil now face Scotland on Wednesday to settle who wins Group C, with everything still to play for.

The weekend weather is kind. At a mild 23°C and dry, today is pleasant after a cold start — a good day to be out around the city.

And it is a free art day. The Pinacoteca is free to all every Saturday, making it the smart pick for a weekend morning.

SUN 21

10% rain

MON 22
26°C
15% rain

TUE 23
20°C
65% rain

It is a pleasant, dry Saturday after a cold start. The high reaches a mild 23°C under largely clear skies, with little rain risk, though as ever in a São Paulo winter the morning begins chilly before the afternoon warms.

Dress in layers you can shed: something warm for the morning, lighter for the mild afternoon, and a jacket again for the cooler evening. It is comfortable weather for being out and about all day.

Sunday stays dry and a touch cooler at 21°C, and Monday warms to 26°C, before rain returns on Tuesday. So the weekend is the dry window — good news for the parks, the open streets and a weekend out in the city.

What to See & Do
SATURDAY IN SÃO PAULO

TODAY’S PICK — PINACOTECA — FREE SATURDAY

Free Saturday at the Pina

The timing is perfect for a weekend morning: the Pinacoteca, the city’s great art museum by the Jardim da Luz, is free to everyone every Saturday. A single ticket — free today — covers all three of its buildings, Pina Luz, Pina Estação and Pina Contemporânea, a few minutes’ walk apart.

At Pina Luz, the main galleries hold Nocaute, the first solo show in Brazil by the Cameroonian artist Pascale Marthine Tayou, whose sculpture and room-filling installations circle questions of identity, movement and how cultures meet. A short walk away, Pina Estação shows Macunaíma é Duwid, a thoughtful reframing of Mário de Andrade’s famous character from an Indigenous perspective. Together they make a rich morning of contemporary Brazilian and international art, all the better for costing nothing today.

The building is a treat in itself, a handsome nineteenth-century pile reworked by the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, all light wells, glass walkways and exposed brick where the old structure meets the new. It opens from 10 am to 6 pm with last entry at 5 pm, and free Saturdays are popular, so arrive early to beat the queue that builds through the morning. The Jardim da Luz outside makes a pleasant pause once the afternoon warms, and with the Luz station right alongside, served by both the Metrô and the CPTM, it is an easy trip in and out — a free, cultured start to a weekend day in the city.

OUTDOORS — A DRY, MILD WEEKEND

A good day for the park

With a dry, mild day once the morning chill lifts, the parks are the place to be. Ibirapuera is the obvious call, free and open daily, its lawns and lake circuit busy and pleasant on a clear winter Saturday, with the Niemeyer pavilions and the MAC USP on hand for some culture.

Saturday is the day São Paulo gets outdoors, so the park will have its weekend buzz — joggers, families, vendors and capoeira circles. It is a fine spot to settle on the grass for an hour or take a brisk loop of the lake, and a good counterpoint to a gallery morning at the Pina.

Save something for tomorrow, too. The big Sunday treat is the car-free Avenida Paulista, handed over to walkers, cyclists and street performers from morning to late afternoon, while the Minhocão also closes to traffic and fills with strollers and skaters — both at their best in the dry weekend weather before the rain returns midweek, and both free.

COFFEE & A SLOW MORNING — VILA MADALENA & JARDINS

A weekend coffee, unhurried

Saturday is for a slow coffee, and São Paulo, Brazil’s coffee capital, does it better than anywhere. In Vila Madalena, Coffee Lab on R. Fradique Coutinho roasts its own beans and is a fine place to ease into the day before the museum or the park.

In the Jardins, Santo Grão on R. Oscar Freire and Suplicy on R. Pamplona are both reliable weekend stops for a serious cup, unhurried and good for watching the city wake up. The warm-but-cool winter morning is made for lingering over a flat white.

If you need a little work done, the cafés are quieter and more relaxed than the weekday coworking spaces, most of which close at the weekend. A corner table and a strong coffee is all you need before the day opens up into the museum, the park or the streets.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — SESC POMPEIA

The dependable open-every-day option

If the Pinacoteca is across town, SESC Pompeia is the other great choice, open daily and never short of something on. Lina Bo Bardi’s conversion of an old drum factory is a São Paulo landmark in its own right, its raw red concrete towers and the aerial walkways between them as loved as anything in the city.

There is always an exhibition, a workshop or live music on the programme, plus a warm café for an easy afternoon, and weekends bring its liveliest crowds. On R. Clélia in Água Branca, a little off the tourist track, it is the kind of place where a Saturday afternoon slips by comfortably, whether you come for a particular show or simply to wander the extraordinary spaces and soak up the atmosphere over a coffee, the long benches and the sunlit deck inviting you to linger.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

A Saturday night, in good spirits

With the win in the bag, São Paulo is in a fine mood for a Saturday night, and the city has no shortage of ways to spend one. There is no Brazil match tonight, so the evening is free for a proper night out, with the bars and music venues at their busiest and best.

Vila Madalena is the obvious heart of it, its streets packed with bars and an easy, sociable energy on a Saturday. For live music, Ó do Borogodó keeps its samba and choro nights running late, while the Baixo Augusta strip is the place for a livelier night across its many bars and clubs, drawing a younger, eclectic crowd.

If you would rather keep it relaxed, the botecos of Pinheiros and Vila Madalena are perfect for a long, easy evening over chope and petiscos. Wrap up warm for the cool night air, keep your valuables close in the crowds, and enjoy the city at its weekend best — São Paulo’s nightlife is among the finest in the country.

Getting Around
TRANSPORT

Good news for drivers: there is no rodízio plate restriction at the weekend, so the roads are freer than on a weekday. Even so, the Metrô is the easiest way around on a busy Saturday, especially heading to the centre or out for the night.

For the Pinacoteca, the Luz station sits right by the museum, served by both the Metrô and the CPTM. If you are heading out late in Vila Madalena or Baixo Augusta, plan your route home, as ride apps get busy and pricey at closing time.

05
Where to Eat
LUNCH & DINNER

Lunch: The weekend feijoada is a São Paulo Saturday tradition, rich and slow and best with no plans afterward. Near the Pinacoteca, the Mercado Municipal is a fine stop for its famous mortadella sandwich and pastel de bacalhau among the market stalls.

Dinner: The city’s great strength is its range. Vila Madalena and the Jardins cover everything from cosy botecos to standout restaurants, so a celebratory Saturday dinner — a churrasco, a contemporary tasting menu, or simply petiscos and chope — is easily found.

06
Practical Info
GOOD TO KNOW

A culture tip worth knowing: the Pinacoteca is free every Saturday, one of São Paulo’s best weekend deals. MASP, by contrast, is free on Tuesdays rather than weekends, so expect to pay there today, while SESC Pompeia is always free to enter.

Looking to tomorrow, the car-free Avenida Paulista is a Sunday highlight, with the avenue handed to people from morning to late afternoon. With dry weather holding through the weekend, it is a fine time to pair the open street with a gallery or a park.

07
Community & Lifestyle
FOR NEWCOMERS

São Paulo’s weekends reward those who know its free rituals: the Pinacoteca on Saturday, the open street on Avenida Paulista on Sunday, the parks any day. For newcomers, leaning into these is the easiest way to enjoy the city without spending much at all.

The trick is the rhythm — a free museum morning, a long lunch, a wander through a park or down a car-free avenue. Master that pattern and the weekend opens up, whatever the season, and you start to feel the everyday pulse of the city rather than just its sights.

08
Game Day
GROUP C WATCH

That is more like it. Brazil beat Haiti 3-0 in Philadelphia last night, with all three goals in a dominant first half — Matheus Cunha scoring twice and Vinícius Júnior, who set up both, adding the third right on the interval.

It was the response the country wanted after the stuttering draw with Morocco. Brazil eased off in the second half, even having a fourth from Endrick correctly ruled out, but the job was long done by the break and the performance settled plenty of nerves.

The win lifts Brazil to the top of Group C. Morocco also won, beating Scotland 1-0, so both sides sit on four points, with Brazil ahead on goal difference — which makes the final round all the more interesting.

It comes down to Wednesday. Brazil face Scotland and Morocco play Haiti in simultaneous kickoffs at 7 pm BRT, with the group winner decided then. A point may well be enough for Brazil, but Carlo Ancelotti will want the top spot sealed in style — and Neymar may yet return for it.

09
Business & Markets
WEEK IN FIGURES

The markets are closed for the weekend after a big few days for monetary policy. The Selic now stands at 14.25%, following Wednesday’s quarter-point cut, the third in a row, with the central bank leaving its next move open rather than signalling a pause.

The Ibovespa ended the week near flat, closing Thursday at around 168,300 points, while the dollar firmed toward R$5.17 on a tougher tone from the US Federal Reserve, which held its own rate but hinted at a possible hike later in the year.

For now, the picture is one of gradual easing at home against a more cautious mood abroad. The next big domestic date is the central bank’s July meeting, so the coming weeks should be quieter on the rates front — a chance for the markets to catch their breath.

FAQ
QUICK ANSWERS

What was the score in Brazil vs Haiti?

Brazil won 3-0 in Philadelphia on Friday night, their first win of the World Cup. Matheus Cunha scored twice, in the 23rd and 36th minutes, and Vinícius Júnior added a third on the stroke of half-time, having set up both of Cunha’s goals.

All three goals came in a dominant first half at the Lincoln Financial Field. Brazil eased off after the break, and a fourth from Endrick was correctly ruled out for offside, but the win was comfortable and exactly the response the country wanted after the underwhelming opening draw with Morocco.

Where do Brazil stand in Group C now?

Brazil now top Group C on four points, level with Morocco, who beat Scotland 1-0 the same day, but ahead on goal difference. Scotland sit third on three points, and Haiti are bottom with none.

It all comes down to the final round on Wednesday June 24, with Scotland vs Brazil and Morocco vs Haiti kicking off simultaneously at 7 pm BRT. Brazil need only avoid defeat against Scotland to be sure of going through, but will want to win to secure top spot in the group.

What museums are free in São Paulo this weekend?

The Pinacoteca is free to all today, Saturday, as it is every week, covering all three of its buildings near the Jardim da Luz, with the Tayou show Nocaute the highlight. SESC Pompeia is always free to enter and open daily.

MASP, by contrast, is free on Tuesdays rather than weekends, so expect to pay there today and Sunday. With dry weather holding, it is a good weekend to pair a free gallery morning with a park afternoon, or with Sunday’s car-free Avenida Paulista, which costs nothing at all.

What is the weather like this weekend?

It is dry and mild. Saturday reaches a pleasant 23°C after a cold start, and Sunday stays dry and a touch cooler near 21°C, so the weekend is a comfortable one for being out around the city and its parks.

As always in a São Paulo winter, the mornings begin cold before the afternoons warm up, so dress in layers you can shed and add. Monday then warms to 26°C, before rain returns on Tuesday with around a 65% chance — so the dry window runs right through the weekend and into Monday, the time to be outdoors.
