03What to See & DoCULTURE
Full corridor on a damp Friday — Pinacoteca today, free tomorrow, and the best pre-Brazil museum day
Friday sits in an interesting position this week — the World Cup is exactly one day old, the rain still hasn’t fully cleared, and tomorrow everything shifts again when Brazil kicks off at 7 pm BRT. Today is the quiet day before all of that: the Paulista corridor is fully open, the Pinacoteca (R$15, 10 am–6 pm, Praça da Luz 2) is running all three concurrent shows, and tomorrow it is free. If you can only visit one day this entire weekend, tomorrow is the free one; if you want two, today gives you the full corridor alongside it.
MASP (R$60, 10 am–6 pm, Av. Paulista 1578) with the Damián Ortega survey, IMS Paulista (free, 10 am–8 pm, Av. Paulista 2424) with the Luiz Braga photography show, Japan House SP (free, 10 am–6 pm, Av. Paulista 52) and Itaú Cultural (free, 11 am–8 pm, Av. Paulista 149) are all open today. At 19°C and 45% rain they are precisely where you want to be today — indoors, easily Metrô-accessible, and genuinely excellent.
The MASP belvedere below the concrete pilotis is open even in rain — the São Paulo skyline through drizzle from the suspended platform has its own very particular quality. Pinacoteca · R$15 / R$7.50 meia · 10 am–6 pm · Praça da Luz 2 · Free tomorrow Saturday.
45% rain — Ibirapuera’s covered walkway again, Minhocão at 6 pm if it eases
At 45% rain, Parque Ibirapuera is still worth the trip for exactly the same reason as Thursday — the Niemeyer 1954 covered walkway connecting the pavilions is a genuine architectural experience that rain doesn’t diminish, and the MAC USP entry from inside the marquee means you’re never actually exposed to the weather. The MAC USP inside (free, Tue–Sun, 10 am–6 pm) is open today; the lake circuit and the auditorium esplanade are accessible under the marquee. Tomorrow at 21°C / 20% rain is the better outdoor Ibirapuera day.
The Minhocão closes to cars from 6 pm this evening — at 19°C and 45% rain it is more marginal than on a clear evening, but if the rain eases by late afternoon it becomes a reasonable option before a bar for the day’s World Cup matches. Parque do Povo in Itaim Bibi is free and open daily for a quick midday air break. Parque Ibirapuera · free · daily 5 am–midnight · Av. Pedro Álvares Cabral.
Pre-Brazil match Friday — the last real working morning before the weekend goes to football
Friday mornings during a World Cup have a quality of their own in São Paulo — the city is technically working, but lightly. Coffee Lab at R. Fradique Coutinho 1340, Vila Madalena, opens at 8 am and is the right place for a focused two-hour session before the weekend fully takes over. The indoor space handles 45% rain without any loss of atmosphere; the house roast is at its best in this cool, damp air.
Santo Grão at R. Oscar Freire 413, Jardins, is the Paulista corridor option — a pre-museum coffee before the MASP or IMS visit. At 19°C with the World Cup running, the indoor tables are the ones to aim for rather than the outdoor terrace today.
For coworking: WeWork (Faria Lima towers), Spaces (R. Mourato Coelho 625, Pinheiros) and Cubo Itaú (R. Capote Valente 40, Vila Olímpia) are all on the standard Friday schedule. Rodízio today: plates ending in 7 and 8, restricted 7–10 am and 5–8 pm.
SESC Pompeia and the Mercado Municipal — the two SP institutions that never need the sun
SESC Pompeia at R. Clélia 93, Água Branca, is open every day and is at its best on exactly this kind of rainy Friday — the Lina Bo Bardi water-tower sheds, the pool and the theatre have a specific atmosphere when the city outside is grey and damp. The Friday programme is worth checking at sescsp.org.br; weekend World Cup scheduling often brings special screenings or events.
The Mercado Municipal at R. da Cantareira 306 (Mon–Sat, 6 am–6 pm) makes no concession to rain whatsoever — Bar do Mané’s mortadela sandwich is as good at 19°C as at 28°C, and the stained glass ceiling is arguably better appreciated in the flat light of a cloudy Friday. SESC Pompeia · daily · R. Clélia 93, Água Branca.
World Cup Day 2 evening — the day’s matches, Bar Brahma, and one night before Brazil
The second day of World Cup matches runs through the evening — Canada vs Italy (Toronto, 4 pm BRT), USA vs Paraguay (Los Angeles, 10 pm BRT) are among today’s fixtures, live on SporTV and GE TV. Bar Brahma at Av. São João 677, República, is the natural São Paulo anchor for any World Cup evening: samba from 8 pm, R$25, and the kind of room that runs all day when the tournament is on.
Ó do Borogodó at R. Horácio Lane 21, Vila Madalena, runs the Friday roda from 9 pm, R$30–40. Casa de Francisca at R. José Maria Lisboa 190, Jardim Paulista, from 8 pm, R$40–60 — the jazz room that will have a very different energy by tomorrow’s Brazil match.
Blue Note São Paulo on Av. Paulista runs the Friday headline from 8 pm, R$80–100. Galeria dos Pães at R. Estados Unidos 1645, Jardins, open 24 hours for the late close. If you don’t have a Saturday bar booking yet, ask at wherever you end up tonight — informal reservations still happen face to face.
04Getting AroundTRANSPORT
Rodízio applies: plates ending in 7 and 8, restricted 7–10 am and 5–8 pm. Metrô SP on standard Friday timetable. Linha Azul to Luz for the Pinacoteca; Linha Verde to Brigadeiro for Ibirapuera; Linha Vermelha to República for Bar Brahma. Surface roads will be slower than usual with rain and the end-of-week traffic.
Tomorrow’s Brazil match (7 pm BRT) will generate surface congestion from around 5 pm — plan bar arrivals before 6 pm. The Metrô will be faster than rideshare for anything on the Linha 1-2-3 grid. Congonhas (CGH) on standard Friday timetable.
05Where to EatFOOD
Post-Pinacoteca or Paulista corridor lunch: Riviera at Av. Paulista 2584, R$95, on the avenue. Mercado Municipal at R. da Cantareira 306 for the mortadela sandwich after a Luz morning — ten minutes from Pinacoteca on foot.
Friday dinner with World Cup atmosphere: Bar Brahma at Av. São João 677 from 6 pm, kitchen open through samba. Bráz Pizzaria at R. Vupabuçu 271, Vila Madalena, from 7 pm. A Casa do Porco at R. Araújo 124 open Friday dinner — confirm advance. Galeria dos Pães at R. Estados Unidos 1645 open 24 hours.
06Practical InfoESSENTIALS
Banks on standard Friday hours (10 am–4 pm). B3 trading today — fifth session of the week, following Thursday’s strong +1.71% session. The SpaceX BDR launches on B3 today, the first BDR for the Elon Musk aerospace company on the Brazilian exchange. PIX and all services running normally.
Shopping centres on standard Friday hours, typically 10 am–10 pm. Nomad note: the morning window (8 am–noon) is the most productive part of a World Cup Friday in SP. After noon the city drifts; by early evening it belongs to football. Umbrella essential today — 45% rain doesn’t clear before afternoon. Rodízio plates 7 and 8, 7–10 am and 5–8 pm.
07Community & LifestyleEXPAT LIFE
The Saturday Brazil match (7 pm BRT, 21°C / 20% rain) is the event around which the whole São Paulo expat weekend organises. The American Society São Paulo, Aliança Française and the British Society SP are all running viewing events — check their social channels for confirmed venues. The Vila Madalena circuit on R. Aspicuelta and the Jardins neighbourhood are the two natural expat hubs for the match.
For new arrivals: the combination of Pinacoteca free Saturday morning and Brazil vs Morocco Saturday evening is one of the finer São Paulo weekends available to a newcomer. Free world-class art at 10 am, city at 21°C and 20% rain, then the Brazil match at a neighbourhood bar at 7 pm BRT. It doesn’t get much better than that as an introduction to the city.

Mexico won the opener in chaos — three red cards, two goals, one historic night — and Brazil plays tomorrow
The 2026 World Cup opener was something. Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 at the Azteca — Julián Quiñones scored the first goal of the tournament in the 9th minute, Raúl Jiménez added the second in the 67th — but the match produced three red cards and became the most chaotic World Cup opening in the tournament’s history. South Korea beat Czechia 2-1 in the second match. The opening ceremony featured Shakira, Andrea Bocelli and J Balvin.
Today’s World Cup Day 2 fixtures include Canada vs Italy (4 pm BRT) and USA vs Paraguay (10 pm BRT). Tomorrow: Brazil vs Morocco, MetLife Stadium, NJ, 7 pm BRT, live on Globo, SporTV and GE TV. Brazil won both warmups (Panama 6-2, Egypt 2-1); Neymar’s availability is still unconfirmed. SP forecast for the match: 21°C / 20% rain.
09Business & MarketsFINANCE
Thursday was the best market day in weeks. Ibovespa +1.71% to 171,497 points — back above 170,000 after nine days below — following Trump’s announcement that he had cancelled planned strikes against Iran and that JD Vance would attend the signing of a deal in Europe this weekend. Dow gained 1.86%, Nasdaq 2.54%. The dollar fell 1.40% to R$5.10.
Volume was R$30.46 billion. The YTD recovered to +6.44%; the month-to-date is now -1.32%. The session high of 171,927 was the index’s best level since June 2. One note of caution: Trump has cited an imminent Iran deal roughly three dozen times over two months — Thursday’s announcement was priced as more credible specifically because JD Vance’s named participation in a concrete signing ceremony is a more verifiable detail than previous comments.
The SpaceX BDR also launches on B3 today — the first time Brazilian investors can access the Musk aerospace company directly on the local exchange. The Copom on June 17–18 remains the month’s structural event regardless of the Iran situation.

11Frequently Asked QuestionsFAQ
What happened in the World Cup opener and what is today’s schedule?
Mexico 2-0 South Africa at the Azteca — Julián Quiñones (9′) scored the first goal of the tournament and Raúl Jiménez (67′) added the second. Three red cards made it the most chaotic World Cup opener on record. South Korea beat Czechia 2-1 in the day’s second match. Opening ceremony: Shakira, Andrea Bocelli, J Balvin.
Today’s Day 2: Canada vs Italy 4 pm BRT (Toronto), USA vs Paraguay 10 pm BRT (Los Angeles) — both SporTV and GE TV. Tomorrow: Brazil vs Morocco 7 pm BRT.
Why did the Ibovespa surge yesterday and what is the Iran situation?
Trump announced on Thursday that he had cancelled planned strikes against Iran and that a deal would be signed in Europe this weekend, with VP JD Vance attending the ceremony. That sent the Ibovespa up 1.71% to 171,497, the dollar down 1.40% to R$5.10, and Dow and Nasdaq up 1.86% and 2.54% respectively.
Vance’s named attendance at a specific signing ceremony was more concrete than the several dozen “deal is close” remarks over two months that hadn’t moved markets as strongly. If signed this weekend, expect a Monday rally continuation.
Is the Pinacoteca free today or tomorrow?
The Pinacoteca is R$15 today and free tomorrow Saturday — its regular free Saturday covering all three buildings (Pina Luz, Pina Estação and Pina Contemporânea). If you can only go one day, tomorrow is the obvious choice: free entry and 21°C / 20% rain make it the best cultural morning of the weekend.
Also open today: MASP (R$60), IMS Paulista (free), Japan House SP (free), Itaú Cultural (free). Practical split if doing both days: free options (IMS + Japan House) today, Pinacoteca tomorrow. Pinacoteca · Praça da Luz 2 · 10 am–6 pm · free Saturday.
Where should I watch Brazil vs Morocco tomorrow in São Paulo?
Brazil play Morocco on Saturday June 13 at MetLife Stadium, NJ, at 7 pm BRT — live on Globo, SporTV and GE TV. SP forecast is 21°C / 20% rain: outdoor terrace bars are viable. The Vila Madalena circuit on R. Aspicuelta and R. Mourato Coelho and the Jardins neighbourhood are the two natural SP hubs.
Options: Bar Brahma (Av. São João 677), Ó do Borogodó (R. Horácio Lane 21, Vila Madalena), Blue Note SP rooftop (Av. Paulista, book ahead). Arrive by 6 pm — good spots fill by 6:30 pm.
