Rio de Janeiro · FESTIVALS

Key Facts

Dates: 4, 5, 6 and 7 September, then 11, 12 and 13 September 2026.

Venue: Cidade do Rock, inside the Parque Olímpico in Barra da Tijuca.

Shuttle: BRT Expresso Rock in Rio, R$29 return, about US$5.58.

Buy it: only through the Jaé app, with a booked departure slot.

Metro: integration with the festival shuttle happens at Jardim Oceânico only.

Going home: Jardim Oceânico is the one station that boards passengers overnight.

The set times are out and so is the transport plan. The part worth reading twice is the overnight rule, because only one station lets you board after midnight.

Rock in Rio returns to the Cidade do Rock in Barra da Tijuca over two September weekends. Getting in is easy; the question every year is how you get back.

When Rock in Rio runs

The festival takes seven days across two weekends. It runs on 4, 5, 6 and 7 September, then again on 11, 12 and 13 September.

Monday 7 September is Independence Day, a national holiday. That matters for transport, because the metro runs holiday hours rather than weekday hours.

Rock in Rio has run in the city since 1985 and now alternates with editions abroad. This is the Brazilian one.

The official shuttle

The BRT Expresso Rock in Rio is the festival’s own bus service. It runs in dedicated lanes to Terminal Centro Olímpico, the closest stop to the gates.

It leaves from three points: Jardim Oceânico in Barra da Tijuca, Alvorada, and Paulo da Portela in Madureira. Service runs from 11am until 5am the following morning.

A return ticket is R$29, about US$5.58 at the rate of R$5.2012 to the dollar quoted on 17 August.

Tickets are sold only through the Jaé app. You book a departure slot, and on arrival you are given a wristband that gets you onto the return bus.

The metro, and the one station that matters

MetrôRio published its festival scheme on 17 August. Lines 1 and 4 run between Uruguai and Jardim Oceânico; Line 2 runs between Pavuna and Botafogo.

Transfers between Lines 1 and 2 work at Central do Brasil and at Botafogo throughout the festival.

The detail to hold on to: integration with the festival shuttle happens at Jardim Oceânico and nowhere else. Vicente de Carvalho will not connect to the festival service.

Line 4 is the one that reaches Barra. From Ipanema or Copacabana it is a direct ride to Jardim Oceânico.

Getting home after midnight

On Fridays and Saturdays the metro runs its normal hours, 5am to midnight. Overnight, Jardim Oceânico stays open around the clock for boarding.

Every other station is open for disembarking only until the next morning’s 5am start. You can get off a train there; you cannot get on one.

On the two Sundays and on the Monday holiday the metro runs 7am to 11pm, with the same overnight arrangement afterwards.

In practice that means one thing. Whatever route you took in, plan the return through Jardim Oceânico.

Rio’s metro does not normally run all night. This overnight scheme exists only for the festival dates.

The first weekend’s set times

Friday 4 September is billed as Rock Day. On the main stage, Palco Mundo, Nova Twins open at 4.40pm, The Hives play at 7pm and Rise Against at 9.20pm.

Foo Fighters close it at five past midnight, which is to say in the early hours of Saturday. That is the set the overnight transport rule exists for.

The Palco Sunset runs Di Ferrero at 3.30pm and Detonautas with Biquíni at 5.50pm. Hot Milk follow at 8.10pm, then Capital Inicial with Dado Villa-Lobos at 10.45pm.

Saturday 5 September is Metal Day, with its own published grid.

What has not been announced

Gate opening times have not been published. Neither has a detailed parking or ride-hailing plan.

The festival app carries the programme and service information, and is where those details will appear first.

Bag rules and any cashless payment system have not been published either. Both usually appear in the app close to the date.

Practical notes

A single metro ride is R$7.90, about US$1.52. MetrôRio is asking people to buy tickets in advance rather than queue on the night.

The shuttle ticket and the metro fare are separate purchases. One does not include the other.

Buy the shuttle ticket before the day. Slots are booked in the app, and a sold-out slot is a long walk.

Barra is a long way from the south zone. Allow an hour from Copacabana even with a clear run.

The wristband you get on arrival is what boards you onto the return bus. Do not take it off.
