Welcome to your Rio de Janeiro daily brief for Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Carmen Portinho: Modernidade em Construção at the MAM enters its final four days before closing Sunday — the retrospective tracing the engineer-urbanist who reshaped how Rio built and lived is running alongside Daniel Buren’s sail installation in the foyer, both open today. The CCBB keeps its Wednesday music programming alive and Viva Mauricio continues its immersive run. At the Maracanã tonight, Flamengo host Cruzeiro at 21h30 in a meeting of freshly crowned state champions — Leonardo Jardim’s second match in charge after the Cariocão penalty shootout triumph. Tuesday’s session delivered continued relief: the Ibovespa rose 1.40% to 183,447 after briefly surpassing 185,000, while the dollar closed at R$5.1655. This Rio de Janeiro daily brief covers culture, weather, transport, food, and everything you need for the day.

This is part of The Rio Times’ daily Rio de Janeiro coverage for expats and the international community.

03What to See & DoWhat to see & do

MAM Rio — Carmen Portinho: Modernidade em Construção (Four Days Left)

Carmen Portinho: Modernidade em Construção closes on Sunday March 15 — four days from today. The retrospective covers the engineer, urbanist, feminist activist and long-serving MAM director whose career spans the formative decades of Brazilian modernism. Over 300 historical documents are organised across three nuclei — housing and social urbanism, feminism, and art and education — alongside commissioned works by Milena Manfredini, Rommulo Vieira Conceição and Ana Linnemann. Wednesday and Thursday are the last weekday windows before the closing weekend. Free admission.

Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85, Parque do Flamengo. Wed–Sat 10h–18h, Sun 10h–18h (10h–11h sensory-accessible). Free. Closes March 15.

MAM Rio — Daniel Buren: Voile/Toile – Toile/Voile

The eleven Optimist-class sails from January’s Guanabara Bay regatta continue to fill the MAM foyer, arranged in strict finishing order — Buren’s protocol unchanged across fifty years of editions in Geneva, Lucerne, Miami, Minneapolis and now Rio. Each sail carries his signature 8.7cm vertical stripes. The first Brazilian edition of this landmark project. Free admission.

Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85, Parque do Flamengo. Wed–Sun 10h–18h. Free. Through April 12.

CCBB — Viva Mauricio & Vetores-Vertentes (Open Today)

The CCBB runs two exhibitions today. Viva Mauricio — the immersive experience dedicated to Mauricio de Sousa and the Turma da Mônica — continues on the ground and first floors through April 13. Upstairs, Vetores-Vertentes: Fotógrafas do Pará showcases Amazonian women photographers through March 30. The CCBB also hosts a Wednesday music series (runs through March 25) and a special event at 17h30 today. Free admission.

Rua Primeiro de Março 66, Centro. Wed–Mon 9h–20h (last entry 19h). Closed Tuesdays. Free. Viva Mauricio through Apr 13. Vetores-Vertentes through Mar 30.

Blue Note Rio — Yumi Park: (Des)Construção (Tonight, 20h)

Korean-Brazilian pianist Yumi Park presents (Des)Construção — a programme deconstructing classical and Brazilian popular forms. Part of the Blue Note Rio’s March women’s programme. 20h tonight.

Av. Atlântica 1910, Copacabana. Tickets via Eventim.

04Getting AroundHow to move

MetrôRio runs Lines 1, 2 and 4 on normal weekday service, 5h to midnight. For the MAM: Line 1 to Cinelandîa or Largo do Machado, then walk through Parque do Flamengo. For the CCBB: Line 1 to Cinelandîa or Uruguaiana, then VLT to Parada dos Museus.

VLT Linha 1 connects Terminal Gentileza through Centro daily 6h–midnight. Parada dos Museus serves the CCBB and the Praça Mauá museums (MAR and Museu do Amanhã both closed today).

Maracanã tonight: Metrô Line 2 to Maracanã station (direct from Centro, Botafogo or Tijuca). Flamengo v Cruzeiro kicks off at 21h30. Gates open approximately 19h30. Return trains run about 30 minutes after the final whistle. Expect congestion on Radial Oeste from 19h. The metrô is the best option — ride-share surge pricing is common post-match.

Fares: Ônibus, BRT, VLT: R$5,00. MetrôRio single: R$7,00. Metro–BRT integration: R$9,70. Jaé card accepted across municipal modes.

05Where to EatWhere to eat

After the MAM — Parque do Flamengo and Catete: After visiting the Buren sails and the Portinho retrospective, walk south through Parque do Flamengo to Lamas (Rua Marquês de Abrantes 18, Flamengo) — open since 1874, serving traditional carioca plates like filé à Osvaldo Aranha. Open for lunch from 11h30.

Near the CCBB — Centro: The Travessa do Comércio under the Arco do Teles arch offers several restaurants and bars within a short walk of the CCBB entrance. Boteco Casual serves affordable petiscos and draft chope. Open weekdays from 11h.

Pre-match — Tijuca: If heading to the Maracanã for Flamengo v Cruzeiro, the bar circuit along Rua São Francisco Xavier fills early. Arrive before 19h for a table.

07Community & LifestyleLocal life

Two champions, one pitch. The Maracanã hosts Flamengo v Cruzeiro tonight at 21h30 for Brasileirão Round 5. Both clubs arrive as freshly crowned state champions — Flamengo won the Cariocão on penalties over Fluminense last Sunday, with Leonardo Jardim winning a trophy in his very first match as manager; Cruzeiro broke a seven-year Mineiro drought in an intense final against Atlético-MG. Jardim’s second match draws extra attention. Expect a loud, full stadium — and significant congestion on Radial Oeste from 19h.

Thursday at São Januário. Vasco host Palmeiras at 19h30 tomorrow for another Brasileirão Round 5 fixture. Palmeiras lead the table; Vasco have yet to win. The match brings additional traffic to Barros Filho on a Thursday evening.

The cultural week ahead. The MAR opens Guilhermina Augusti’s first institutional individual show on Saturday March 14 — a good reason to pair a Bienal visit with the new opening if you’re planning a museum day this weekend. Saturday is also free admission (MAR de Graça). Carmen Portinho closes Sunday. Plan accordingly.

08Game DayGame day

Brasileirão Betano — Round 5, Wednesday March 11: Flamengo v Cruzeiro — 21h30, Maracanã. Leonardo Jardim’s second match in charge. Broadcast: TV Globo (open), GETV, Premiere. 09Business & MarketsMarket watch

Ibovespa: Closed Tuesday at 183,447 points, up 1.40% — the second consecutive positive session. The index briefly surpassed 185,000 intraday before pulling back as US markets turned negative in the afternoon. Volume: R$23.2 billion, above the 50-session average. The rally continued to ride Trump’s signal that the Iran conflict could end soon, though conflicting reports about intensified attacks kept volatility elevated.

Dollar: Closed Tuesday at R$5.1655, near stable after Monday’s sharp 1.52% fall. The real is at its strongest since late February, supported by high domestic yields and oil-export flows. Year-to-date, the dollar is down approximately 5.8%.

Selic: 15.00% (current rate). The Focus Report raised the year-end forecast from 12.00% to 12.13%, reflecting hawkish concern that the widening fuel-price gap between international benchmarks and domestic pump prices may feed through to inflation. The Copom meets March 17–18; a 25–50bp cut remains the base case, though Ormuz may temper guidance.

Oil: Brent settled near US$99 on Tuesday after Monday’s spike to US$118. The Strait of Ormuz remains partially closed. Trump told Iran to remove mines “immediately”; CNN reported Iran had begun installing mines in the strait. G7 finance ministers discussed coordinated emergency petroleum reserve releases.

Context: Tuesday extended Monday’s relief rally, but the cautious undertone remains. Oil at US$99 is still 40% above pre-crisis levels. The Focus Report has already begun repricing the Selic path. Light Aneel tariff increase of 8.59% approved for Rio’s distribution area — household electricity bills will rise. Wednesday’s session faces a lighter domestic calendar with the IGP-M first preview already released (arrefecimento to −0.19%). The Copom in six days is the next major catalyst.
