It is the day Rio has been waiting for. Brazil face Haiti tonight at 9:30 pm, in a World Cup match they need to win to take charge of their group.

One name is missing. Neymar did not travel and will sit this one out, with the team hoping to have him back for Scotland next week.

The weather could not be more fitting. At 24°C and dry, it is a gorgeous Friday, and the warmth builds into a glorious beach weekend.

And the clock is running on culture. The Yoshitaka Amano show at the CCBB closes Sunday, so this is your final weekend to catch it.

It is a beautiful Friday in Rio. The high reaches a warm 24°C under near-clear skies, with barely a 5% chance of rain, so the city is set up perfectly for the day and the evening’s football.

Dress for summer warmth: light clothes, sunglasses, and sunscreen if you are heading to the sand. The evening stays mild, ideal for watching the match outdoors at a bar or on the beach.

The good news is the weekend is even better. Saturday peaks at a glorious 26°C, and while Sunday carries a slightly higher rain chance, both days are warm and beach-friendly — summer in winter, just as Rio does best.

What to See & Do
FRIDAY IN RIO

TODAY’S PICK — CCBB — CENTRO

Final weekend for Yoshitaka Amano

This is it for one of the year’s most striking shows. The Yoshitaka Amano retrospective at the CCBB, Além da Fantasia, closes on Sunday, so a Friday visit is your best chance to see it before the closing-weekend crowds descend.

Amano is among the most influential visual artists working in Japan, and the show ranges across fine art, illustration, fashion and the worlds of animation and gaming. It traces the line from Japanese calligraphy, Noh theatre and ukiyo-e prints through to his famous pop-culture collaborations across decades of work, and many of the pieces have never before been shown in Brazil. The dreamlike, intricate style rewards an unhurried visit, with detail layered into every frame, so give yourself a good hour or more among it rather than a quick pass.

Entry is free, with tickets released online through the bank’s culture portal and at the box office, though they go fast, so arrive early on a Friday before the after-work crowd builds. The CCBB itself is a beautifully restored early-twentieth-century banking hall on Rua Primeiro de Março, its glass-domed rotunda worth a look in its own right, and there are usually other shows on across its floors plus a café and a bookshop. With the exhibition gone after Sunday, a calm weekday visit comfortably beats fighting the final-day queues, and it makes an easy, cultured start to a weekend that turns squarely toward the beach and the football from here.

OUTDOORS — A GLORIOUS DAY FOR IT

The beach is calling

With a warm, dry 24°C and the weekend looking even better, this is a day to be outside. Ipanema and Leblon are the classic choices, the sand busy and the sea inviting, and a Friday afternoon there is one of Rio’s simplest and greatest pleasures, the city visibly exhaling into the weekend.

For something more active, the Lagoa circuit and the Aterro do Flamengo are at their best in clear conditions like these, the bay sparkling and the mountains sharp against the sky. Both make an easy walk, run or cycle, with Pão de Açúcar a fine target for the long views if you fancy heading up before the light softens.

Saturday is warmer still at 26°C, so this is the start of a proper beach weekend. Get your bearings today, then make a full day of it tomorrow — Pedra do Sal, the Sunday markets and the seafront all reward the warm, settled spell ahead, and the MAR is free on Saturday if you want to fold in some culture.

COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — CENTRO & BOTAFOGO

Wrap up the week, then enjoy it

It is a Friday with a match to look forward to, so the trick is getting the work done in good time. In Centro, near the CCBB, Curto Café is the pick for excellent coffee and a focused hour, with its pay-what-you-think spirit.

Over in Botafogo, Urban Bean keeps a calm room and a steady connection, and Como Coworking nearby is the dependable choice for a full day at a desk. Both empty out early on a Friday as the city shifts into weekend mode and the football beckons.

If you are near the port at the WeWork Porto Maravilha, the cafés around Praça Mauá are a fine spot to round off the week in the sun. With the weather this good, finishing up early to claim a bar table before kickoff is the smart play.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — PEDRA DO SAL

Samba at the home of the genre

If the match leaves you wanting more of the night, Pedra do Sal in the port district is one of Rio’s great open-air traditions, the historic birthplace of samba and a cradle of carioca culture. On a warm Friday, the roda de samba draws a crowd to the old stone steps, with live music, cold beer and an easy, welcoming atmosphere that runs late into the evening.

It is free and unfussy, the kind of place where locals and visitors mingle and the samba carries on past midnight. Go with some cash for the street vendors, keep your phone tucked away as you would anywhere busy, and let the night carry you — it is one of the most authentic evenings the city offers, and a perfect way to celebrate or commiserate after the football has finished.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

Match night, the way Rio does it

Tonight belongs to the football. Brazil kick off against Haiti at 9:30 pm, and the city’s bars, botequins and beachfront kiosks will be packed with people in yellow, screens on and the chope flowing freely. It is one of the great communal nights of the Rio calendar, win or draw.

For atmosphere, the bars of Lapa, the botequins of Botafogo and the kiosks along Copacabana and Ipanema are all good bets, but they fill fast on a warm match night, so claim a table well before kickoff. Bar Urca and the Flamengo seafront are quieter alternatives if you would rather watch away from the biggest, rowdiest crowds.

If the result goes Brazil’s way, expect the celebrations to spill out into the warm night and on toward Pedra do Sal and Lapa. Keep your wits about you in the crowds and your valuables close, take only what you need, and enjoy one of the things Rio does better than almost anywhere in the world, whatever the scoreline turns out to be.

Getting Around
TRANSPORT

Friday evenings are always busy, and a warm match night more so, with people heading to bars and the beach. The Metrô is the easiest way around, though expect crowds, and ride apps will surge around kickoff and again at full time.

For the CCBB and Centro, the Metrô to Uruguaiana or Carioca is simplest, with the VLT serving the port and Pedra do Sal. If you are out late after the match, plan your route home in advance and stick to busy, well-lit streets.

05
Where to Eat
LUNCH & DINNER

Lunch: Make the most of the sunshine. A per-kilo lunch in Centro is quick before an afternoon out, or grab something light near the beach — a sandes natural and an açaí set you up nicely for a warm afternoon on the sand.

Dinner: Tonight, dinner and the match go together. The botequins of Botafogo and the beachfront kiosks do petiscos and cold beer made for game-watching, so settle in early somewhere with a screen and a good crowd.

Practical Info
GOOD TO KNOW

A culture reminder, since it matters this weekend: the Amano show at the CCBB ends Sunday, so today or tomorrow is the time, and the CCBB is open until 8 pm with free, limited tickets. Closing weekends draw crowds, so go early.

For match night, the game is on Globo, SporTV and Globoplay from 9:30 pm. Bars fill fast on a warm Friday, so book or arrive early if you want a table, and have a plan for getting home through the post-match rush.

Community & Lifestyle
FOR NEWCOMERS

A World Cup night is the best way to feel the pulse of the city. For newcomers, watching the game out among the crowds — rather than at home — is when Rio’s warmth and noise and joy really come alive, and you are always welcome to join in.

A few simple tips: wear something yellow to fit right in, take only what you need into the crowds, and learn a couple of chants from your neighbours. Win or lose, the camaraderie is the point, and it is one of the easiest ways to feel part of the place.

08
Game Day
MATCH DAY

Tonight is the night. Brazil face Haiti in Philadelphia at 9:30 pm BRT, in a Group C match they must win after the underwhelming 1-1 draw with Morocco in their opener. A convincing performance is what the country wants to see.

The standings sharpen the stakes. Scotland lead on three points after beating Haiti, with Brazil level with Morocco on one apiece, so victory tonight would put Carlo Ancelotti’s side firmly back in command of the group before facing Scotland next week.

Neymar will not feature: he stayed at the training base in New Jersey rather than travelling, still working back from a calf injury, with hopes of returning for the Scotland match on Wednesday. In his absence, Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha and Matheus Cunha are expected to lead the attack.

Brazil are heavy favourites — they thrashed Haiti 7-1 the last time the sides met — but after a shaky start, the performance matters as much as the result. The match is on Globo, SporTV and Globoplay, with kickoff at 9:30 pm.

Business & Markets
WEEK IN FIGURES

The dust is settling after a big week for rates. The Ibovespa ended Thursday near flat, down 0.10% at 168,278 points, as investors digested a central bank statement that several read as more dovish than expected.

The Selic now sits at 14.25% after Wednesday’s quarter-point cut, the third in a row. The communiqué left the door open on further moves rather than signalling a pause, which is what drove the gentler reading of the bank’s intentions.

The dollar, though, firmed to around R$5.17, pressured by the tougher tone from the US Federal Reserve earlier in the week. Even so, the real is still stronger over the year, helped by Brazil’s high interest rates continuing to draw in foreign capital.

FAQ
QUICK ANSWERS

What time is Brazil vs Haiti, and where can I watch?

Brazil face Haiti tonight, Friday June 19, in Philadelphia, with kickoff at 9:30 pm BRT. The match is live on Globo and SporTV, with streaming on Globoplay, and a warm, dry evening makes it ideal for watching out at a bar.

For atmosphere, the bars of Lapa, the botequins of Botafogo and the beachfront kiosks of Copacabana and Ipanema are all good spots to watch with a crowd. They fill quickly on a match night, though, so arrive early to be sure of a table and a good view of the screen.

Is Neymar playing against Haiti?

No. Neymar did not travel to Philadelphia with the squad, staying at the training base in New Jersey to keep working back from a calf injury. He will sit out tonight’s match against Haiti entirely.

The hope within the camp is that he will be fit to return for Brazil’s final group match, against Scotland on Wednesday June 24. For tonight, Carlo Ancelotti is expected to lean on Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha and Matheus Cunha to break down a Haiti side that defended well in its narrow opening loss to Scotland.

When does the CCBB Amano show close?

The Yoshitaka Amano retrospective, Além da Fantasia, runs at the CCBB until Sunday June 22, so this is its final weekend. The CCBB is open today from 9 am to 8 pm, with free but limited tickets released online and at the box office.

Given it is the closing weekend, expect crowds, especially on Sunday, so a Friday visit is the calmer choice. Arrive early to be sure of a slot, and leave time to see the other exhibitions usually on across the CCBB’s beautifully restored floors.

What is the weather like for the weekend?

It is excellent. Friday is warm and dry near 24°C, perfect for the match evening, and Saturday is the pick of the weekend at a glorious 26°C with low rain risk — a proper beach day from morning on.

Sunday stays warm near 24°C but carries a slightly higher chance of rain, around 20%, so the morning is the safer bet for the beach or the markets before any afternoon shower. All told, it is a warm, settled weekend across the board — summer weather dropped into the middle of the Rio winter, and a fine excuse to be outdoors.
