Ibovespa Slips Into Holiday Lull As Banking Shock And Fed Jitters Weigh On B3
On the eve of Brazil’s Black Consciousness Day holiday, the Ibovespa slid 0.73% to 155,380.66 points, marking its third straight decline as traders chose caution over fresh risk.
With B3 closed this Thursday, that level remains the market’s reference point, while the dollar advanced to about R$ 5.34 amid renewed global appetite for US assets.
Two forces framed the pullback. Abroad, investors digested Federal Reserve minutes that cooled hopes of another rate cut in December, keeping US yields and the dollar firm.
At home, confidence in the financial system was shaken by the Central Bank’s decision to liquidate Banco Master after a sweeping Federal Police probe into alleged false credit securities.
Fears that major banks may have to inject more money into the Credit Guarantee Fund pushed the whole sector lower. Banks were among the weakest names.

Banco do Brasil and Santander each lost more than 1%, while B3 itself also felt the strain as trading volumes thinned to below-average pre-holiday levels. Meatpacker Marfrig led the broader sell-off, tumbling 8.6% after an explosive rally earlier in the month.
Minerva dropped just over 4%, and defensives also suffered: power utility Cemig PN and retailer Assaí each fell about 3%, while telecom operator TIM slipped a similar amount on profit-taking after a strong run.
Selective gains highlight Brazil’s shifting market mood
Yet there were pockets of resilience that point to investors’ longer-term priorities. GPA topped the winners’ list, rising close to 5% as easing long-term interest-rate futures offered rare relief to rate-sensitive retailers.
Smart Fit added around 2.5%, helped by a recent block trade that boosted liquidity and institutional interest. Embraer, trading under its new EMBJ3 ticker, climbed more than 2% as record order backlogs kept demand strong despite market nerves.
Health-care group Hapvida recovered some ground after a brutal post-earnings correction, and rail operator Rumo advanced nearly 2% as investors sought out infrastructure plays seen as central to growth.
Technically, the index remains in an uptrend, but short-term momentum has clearly cooled: indicators on four-hour charts show fading strength, while the daily picture suggests only a modest correction after an extended rally.
When trading resumes on Friday, B3 will need to catch up with global moves driven by Nvidia’s blockbuster results and any fresh headlines from the Banco Master case—two tests of whether Brazil’s recent optimism can withstand a bout of harder scrutiny.
