Colombia and ELN Extend Ceasefire for Six Months

Colombia’s government and the ELN rebels have decided to continue their ceasefire for another six months.

Starting February 6, 2024, this extension builds on the peace in place since August 3.

The announcement came early Tuesday in Havana, marking a significant step forward in the peace process.

Both sides released a joint statement on X, committing to halt kidnappings. The ELN’s unilateral decision to stop these actions supports the ceasefire’s goals.

This move follows discussions in Mexico last December, where the ELN agreed to end kidnappings for ransom, easing tensions notably after the October incident involving soccer star Luis Díaz’s father.

Cuba hosted the latest round of talks, emphasizing the ongoing effort to solidify peace. The negotiations, however, hit a snag, delaying the truce’s extension.

The ELN stated on Monday that resolving crisis factors was crucial for the ceasefire’s renewal.

Just a week earlier, both parties had agreed to a brief truce extension, allowing more time for talks.

These discussions are part of President Gustavo Petro’s Total Peace plan, which is aimed at ending conflicts with various groups.

The peace talks had stalled under the previous administration following an attack on a police academy.

This continuous dialogue is pivotal for Colombia, a country striving to overcome six decades of conflict that has affected millions.

The ceasefire extension aims to maintain peace and lay the groundwork for a lasting resolution in a nation eager for tranquility.
