Mato Grosso state service sector is recording significant growth, above the Brazilian average

In May, the service sector in Mato Grosso experienced substantial growth, expanding by 22.5% compared to April.

In contrast, the national average for the same period was 0.9%. These figures were released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on Tuesday.

The IBGE monitors the performance of the sector through the Monthly Survey of Services (PMS).

Year to date, the country’s service sector has grown by 4.8%, with a 6.4% increase over the past 12 months.

The transportation sector played a significant role in the national average, making notable progress.

The transportation sector witnessed a growth of 2.2%, recovering from a 4.3% decline in April.

Cargo transportation saw a substantial advancement of 3.7%, reaching its highest historical level since 2011.

This category registered a remarkable 41.3% increase compared to February 2020.

Passenger transport also experienced growth in May, rising by 2.8% following a 4.5% decrease in the previous month.

Rodrigo Lobo, the PMS manager, stated that both the passenger and cargo segments of the transportation sector witnessed growth.

The aviation sector played a significant role in passenger transport, while waterway and road transportation modes stood out for cargo transport.

The strong performance of cargo transportation companies can be attributed to the current momentum in the agricultural sector.

Lobo emphasized that the record grain harvest has a significant influence on transportation, particularly road cargo.

This growth trend in the transportation sector began in May 2020, coinciding with the start of the pandemic, and has been closely linked to increased agricultural production and the surge in e-commerce.

Furthermore, four other segments analyzed in the survey also experienced growth. Services provided to households expanded by 1%, while other services grew by 0.6%.

The information and communication sector also saw a modest increase of 0.2%.
