Raízen wants to become world market leader for sustainable aviation fuel, says CEO

Raízen, a Brazilian energy company, has expressed its ambition to become a global leader in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), leveraging second-generation ethanol (E2G) produced from common ethanol and sugar manufacturing residues.

The company sees a unique opportunity in the aviation industry’s search for decarbonization solutions.

Raízen’s CEO Ricardo Mussa stated in an article in Bloomberg in linea that demand for their product currently exceeds their supply capacity.

They are in discussions for large contracts with manufacturers, highlighting the need for a stable supply of raw materials.

The company plans to construct 20 second-generation ethanol plants by 2030 to meet demand.

Despite facing challenges like efficient technology operation, cost, and labor qualification, Raízen maintains a competitive edge because it is one of the world’s largest sugarcane producers.

However, the company’s strategy isn’t without risk, including peak investments leading to concerns about cash generation and debt and possible weather disruptions to the sugarcane harvest.
