Brazil sees unprecedented influx of Venezuelan migrants in Q1 2023 amid economic crisis

During the initial quarter of 2023, Brazil witnessed an unprecedented influx of 51,838 Venezuelan migrants and refugees, the largest recorded for this period since data collection began in 2017.

As per the reports released by Operação Acolhida, an initiative involving the Brazilian government, UN agencies, and numerous local and international partners, the total number of Venezuelans arriving in Brazil up to April 2023 stands at 903,279.

The director of Casa Venezuela, a Brazilian NGO, Alejandro Guzmán, associates this increase with the deteriorating economic situation in Venezuela.

The NGO aids the newcomers’ integration into Brazilian society, primarily through employment opportunities, but recent arrivals are proving to be more vulnerable, complicating their job placement.

Guzmán noted, “The newcomers are in dire circumstances, which hinders their introduction into the labor market.”

Among other support, Casa Venezuela offers vocational training, Portuguese language classes, and assists about 3,000 people monthly with integration into the job market.

Guzmán stated that the dire economic conditions in Venezuela, characterized by significant currency devaluation and low wages, are pushing more people to emigrate.

Despite the challenges, Operação Acolhida celebrated a milestone on March 30, having assisted over 100,000 Venezuelan migrants and refugees.

In response to the growing need, the Brazilian Ministry of Development and Social Assistance pledged over US$1.8 million to reinforce social safety nets in 15 municipalities and 10 states.

The Minister emphasized the initiative’s commitment to meeting the basic needs of the vulnerable migrants, while respecting cultural differences and creating new opportunities.
