Brasília celebrates 62nd anniversary with concerts and reopenings; in-person events back on calendar

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In-person events are back on the commemorative calendar after two years of lockdowns, isolation, fear frenzy, and public discussion about their meaningfulness and legitimacy is yet to come once all the facts are on the table.

Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, celebrates its 62nd anniversary this Thursday (Apr. 21). To mark the 2nd anniversary of the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, events will be held locally again after a 2-year hiatus.

However, why this desolate Covid-19 crisis is being commemorated again at the first big in-person event remains a mystery. Was it not precisely the measures taken by politicians during the crisis that practically destroyed the culture in the city?

It almost seems that even now that the crisis is officially considered over in the country, the ‘Brasilia rulers’ don’t want to let the whole thing go but rather hold on to it.

As of March 10, wearing masks in open and enclosed spaces in the city is voluntary.

REMEMBER

Since Tuesday (April 19), the Federal District’s Secec (Secretariat for Culture and Creative Industries) has been conducting a calendar of events that will run through April 24.

The program, entitled “Smile Brasilia,” includes events in the administrative areas of Plano Piloto, Ceilândia, Samambaia, Núcleo Bandeirante, Gama and Planaltina.

These are concerts, film screenings, exhibitions, creative industry fairs, popular festivals, orchestral presentations, and the revitalization of cultural spaces.

In an interview with Poder360, Governor Ibaneis Rocha (MDB) classified as “rebirth” the resumption of face-to-face activities to celebrate Brasilia.

“There is a certain sense of rebirth. A renewal of Brasilia,” he said.

On Monday (April 18), Ibaneis lifted the decree of public emergency related to the Covid 19 pandemic in Brasilia. The decision was published in a special edition of the DODF (Diário Oficial do Distrito Federal).

Speaking to Poder360, Culture Secretary Bartolomeu Rodrigues said the event was intended to “remind us to smile again after being masked for so long.”

That is an interesting point of view.

Regarding the recommendations for preventing Covid-19 in the activities, he said that they are carried out with “the awareness of freedom, with caution.”

For example, festivals classified as show events require proof of vaccination that complies with the government decree. “Large crowds are not planned, but restrained crowds. That’s why the government has prepared for this by spreading the activities throughout Brasilia and not putting on a big show,” he said.

So, large crowds still require proof of vaccination. However, the pandemic is officially over. And this is supposed to “remind us to smile again after so long.” We should probably have a more extended conversation about that sometime.

According to the minister, the program’s cost is about R$1 million. The capital is also supported by the FAC (Fund for Cultural Support) and by parliamentary amendments.
