03What to See & DoCULTURE

CCBB RIO — CENTRO

Yoshitaka Amano — open Friday holiday

The CCBB runs full holiday hours on Dia do Trabalho — typically the cleanest Friday-holiday cultural visit in Centro. The 218-original Amano retrospective covers the seven thematic nuclei: Tatsunoko, Final Fantasy, Candy Girl, Devaloka, Vampire Hunter D, Angel’s Egg, and Colaborações. Saturday-Sunday returns the heavy queue pattern as Shakira-bound visitors fill the city — Friday is the cleanest in-window day until the long weekend reset. Free admission · 9h–20h · Through June 22 · Rua Primeiro de Março 66 · Metrô Uruguaiana or VLT Candelária.

MAR — PRAÇA MAUÁ

No Martins, Bienal, Augusti — Friday holiday open

The Museu de Arte do Rio runs holiday hours. The current programme — No Martins’s Sortilégios de desvio (the Belo Horizonte painter’s largest institutional show), the touring 36th Bienal de São Paulo selection, and Guilhermina Augusti — remains on view. Pair with the CCBB on a fifteen-minute walk via VLT Parada dos Museus for the cleanest Centro circuit of the weekend. R$20 / R$10 meia · 11h–18h · Praça Mauá 5, Centro. Saturday is the next free-admission day.

BEACH & PARQUE DO FLAMENGO

Aterro and orla closure — long-weekend opener

The Aterro do Flamengo closes to cars 7h–18h on the holiday Sunday-pattern, opening 1.4 million square metres of Burle Marx landscape, sculpture park, and bay-view runs to walkers, cyclists, and skaters. Avenida Atlântica (Copacabana, full extent), Avenida Vieira Souto (Ipanema and Leblon), and Avenida Niemeyer (São Conrado, 7h–13h) close on the same hours. The Parque do Aterro’s MAM Rio is open with the Rubem Valentim retrospective free, 10h–18h. Bike rentals at Itaú Bike stations along the routes; the canonical Carioca holiday outdoor day.

04Getting AroundTRANSPORT

METRÔRIO — HOLIDAY OPERATION

MetrôRio runs Sunday-pattern hours: 7h to 23h. Critical Friday-as-Sunday rule — Line 2 (Pavuna–Botafogo) runs the full route, but the transfer between Lines 1, 2, and 4 happens across the shared section between Central do Brasil and Botafogo (the dedicated Estácio interchange used Mon–Sat is closed for transfers on the holiday). Line 1/4 (Jardim Oceânico–Uruguai) operates the full Sunday route.

SuperVia runs holiday Sunday hours. The orla closures (Aterro, Atlântica, Vieira Souto, Niemeyer) lift at 18h. Expect Centro and Zona Sul corridors to fill from 17h as the Saturday Shakira-bound traffic begins to build into the orla. Drivers heading to São Conrado after 13h have full access; Niemeyer reopens to cars at 13h.

SHAKIRA SATURDAY — TRANSPORT PLANNING

Saturday’s Shakira show at Copacabana with a projected 2.5 million on the orla means transport planning starts Friday. MetrôRio Line 1 to Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos, or Cantagalo is the cleanest Saturday access — all three stations within 15-minute walks of the Posto 2 stage area. The novarodoviária is expected to receive 215,000 passengers on the day. Avoid driving on Saturday — full Avenida Atlântica closure, plus the surrounding Posto 2 cordon, will overwhelm app-cars from 14h. Plan the return for after midnight or at 6h Sunday — the surge index canonically peaks at 23h45.

05Where to EatFOOD

FRIDAY HOLIDAY LUNCH

Friday-holiday lunch in Rio is the canonical long-weekend opener. Garota de Ipanema on Rua Vinícius de Moraes runs the holiday programme — the beachgoers’ canonical address. Aprazível in Santa Teresa opens its hilltop terrace from 12h with Carioca-meets-Northeastern cooking. Carlota in Lagoa serves the modern Carioca holiday menu by the water. For Centro post-CCBB lunch: Confeitaria Colombo’s flagship at Rua Gonçalves Dias runs the holiday-hours buffet 12h–16h — book ahead, the queue forms at 11h30.

PRE-SHAKIRA FRIDAY DINNER

Friday evening is the natural pre-Shakira Saturday warm-up. Restaurants in Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon book heavily; reserve early. Oro in Leblon (Felipe Bronze’s modern Brazilian tasting), Olympe in Lagoa for the Claude Troisgros menu, Tasca da Esquina in Leblon for the Portuguese Friday lineup. For the polished Friday: Sushi Leblon for the omakase, Aizomê in Ipanema for the omakase, Mishiguene-influenced Sciuê in Botafogo. Bar Lagoa runs the German-Brazilian crossover with the eisbein and the canecas — the long-weekend dinner that pairs with the Aterro perimeter.

06Practical InfoESSENTIALS

DIA DO TRABALHO HOURS

Bank branches closed for Dia do Trabalho; Banco 24 Horas ATMs and Lotéricas remain available across Rio for cash and basic bill payment. Pharmacies on holiday roster: the 24-hour units on Avenida Atlântica (Copacabana) and Rua Visconde de Pirajá (Ipanema) carry continuous service. Drogaria Pacheco and Drogasil run extended Zona Sul holiday coverage. Federal and state offices closed; Riotur tourist information posts at Copacabana, Ipanema, and Galeão airport open holiday Sunday-pattern hours.

The B3 is closed Friday and reopens Monday — see §09 for context. Shopping centres run holiday hours typically 13h–21h (Rio Sul, Shopping Leblon, Village Mall, BarraShopping). Petrobras gas stations and the typical 24-hour conveniences (food, basic supplies) operate normally. Beaches will be heavily attended through the long weekend — lifeguard cabins staffed 7h to 19h.

07Community & LifestyleEXPAT LIFE

Long-weekend Friday in Rio: at 27°C, sea 25°C, with the Aterro and orla closures, the international community’s beach window is in full swing. Posto 9 in Ipanema and Posto 5 in Copacabana run holiday rotation — the smaller crowds before Saturday’s Shakira-driven flood. Lifeguard cabins staffed 7h to 19h. The Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas perimeter loop opens fully to runners and cyclists; the 35% rain risk by mid-afternoon may compress the loop.

Holiday markets: most weekly Saturday markets begin Friday for the long weekend — the Feira Rio Antigo on Rua do Lavradio in Lapa traditionally extends into Friday for major holidays with antiques, vintage clothing, and live chorinho. The Feira da Praça XV at Praço do Paço Imperial in Centro opens 8h–14h. Traditional Saturday markets like the Feira Hippie de Ipanema do not run Friday — that one is Sunday-only at Praça General Osório, 09h–18h. The Cobal do Humaitá’s holiday programme runs the food stalls and live samba from 12h.

For the international community, the Anglican Christ Church in Botafogo runs the Friday-holiday programme; the InterNations Rio Friday holiday meet-up at the Lagoa runs from 17h at Parque dos Patins. The American Society of Rio holiday programme runs the Friday community picnic at Espaço Tom Jobim. The Aterro Sunday-pattern closure makes the Carioca outdoor community day the canonical Friday-holiday programme.

08Game DaySPORT

CONTINENTAL ROUND 3 — THURSDAY RECAP

Vasco’s 3–0 over Olimpia at São Januário (Puma Rodríguez 39′, Nuno Moreira 6’2T, Adson 10’2T, with Adson contributing two assists) lifted the Cruzmaltino from the Group G basement to the leadership on tie-break — 4 points level with Olimpia and Audax Italiano, with Vasco leading on goal difference. Renato Gaúcho served the second of his three-game suspension; Alexandre Mendes coached. Fluminense’s 2–0 loss in La Paz to Bolívar (Robson Matheus brace at 6′ and 56′, with Bernal sent off in the second half) left the Tricolor bottom of Group C on 1 point and apático per the local press. Independiente Rivadavia leads Group C on 9 points.

BRASILEIRÃO ROUND 14 — WEEKEND

No Brasileirão Friday — the Carioca quartet’s Round 14 starts Saturday. Botafogo hosts Remo at the Engenhão 16h Saturday — the Glorioso looking to lift from 9th on 17 points after Round 13’s 2–2 in Brasília. Sunday delivers the classic of the round: Flamengo x Vasco at the Maracanã 16h — the Mengão second on 26 pts after Wednesday’s 1–1 in La Plata, with Arrascaeta out (clavicle/shoulder fracture per club). Vasco arrives buoyed by the Olimpia win, on 16 pts in 10th. Fluminense plays Internacional Sunday 18h30 (Beira-Rio) — the Tricolor third on 26 pts looking to right the Bolívar disappointment.
