Bottom Line Up Front
Today’s verdict: The Riviera Maya is fighting a record sargassum season — nearly 73,000 tonnes cleared statewide, a third of it at Playa del Carmen — as Peru prepares to proclaim its first woman president on Friday and Mexico draw England at the Azteca in the last 16.
01

A record sargassum season. Quintana Roo has cleared nearly 73,000 tonnes of seaweed statewide through late June, its biggest cleanup on record. Playa del Carmen accounts for about a third, though several Cancún beaches remain clear.
02

Peru’s proclamation Friday. The electoral board will formally proclaim Keiko Fujimori, Peru’s first elected woman president, on July 3. Nothing changes for residents before the July 28 handover.
03

Mexico draw England at the Azteca. Mexico’s last-16 tie is against England on Monday, after both won their Round-of-32 matches. Argentina and Colombia close the regional first round on Friday.
What changed since yesterdayThe Riviera Maya’s sargassum season has hit record levels mid-summer, reshaping the beach map for anyone on the Caribbean coast. Colombia’s formal handover talks begin today, and the Colombian peso kept firming.

Good morning. Your LatAm expat nomad daily guide opens on a record sargassum season on the Caribbean coast, a historic proclamation due in Peru, and a marquee World Cup tie set for the Azteca.

Quintana Roo is running its largest-ever seaweed cleanup, and knowing which beaches stay clear now matters. Markets open across the region after a mixed session.

01Visas & Residency

Where What changed What it means for you
Mexico The 2026 fees roughly doubled and a May reform tightened work-visa paperwork, while the permanent-residency shortcut stays closed to non-retirees. Income floors for residency also rose. If moving on sponsorship, budget more time and higher fees; nomads on the solvency route are unaffected.
Peru The board will proclaim Fujimori on Friday, with credentials July 15 and the handover July 28. The digital-nomad permit still cannot be filed. Nothing changes before the handover; expect possible protests in central Lima.
Colombia Formal handover talks begin today, with finance and interior named and other posts pending. No rule changes take effect before the August 7 inauguration. Watch the cabinet; nothing changes for residents yet.
Uruguay The 12% tax on foreign capital income is now live, with the first payments due this month. A reduced 8% rate can apply where a local custodian intermediates. If you became a tax resident in 2026, confirm your withholding and election with an accountant.
Chile A signed “Plan Retorno” decree offers returning Chileans a one-time benefit, with the portal expected to open in July. Foreign residents with regular papers are unaffected. No action unless you are a returning national; watch for the portal to open.

02Cost of Living & Money

These are the overnight pre-open rates against the dollar, with Latin American markets opening today. The Colombian peso kept firming, extending the move that began with the market-friendly finance pick, while the Brazilian real slipped.

Mexican peso 17.53 little changed
Colombian peso 3,368 firmer again
Chilean peso 924 broadly flat
Peruvian sol 3.42 steady
Argentine peso 1,489 near its 2026 high

Argentina’s peso opened the second half near its strongest levels of 2026, after June brought the biggest monthly move in about a year. June inflation, due July 14, may print below 2% for the first time since last August.

03What’s On

Today (Thursday). São Paulo’s Anime Friends is under way at the Distrito Anhembi, and the World Cup’s last 16 takes shape. Buenos Aires continues its run of Ricardo Arjona dates.

This week. Paraguay play France on Saturday and Brazil meet Norway on Sunday, before Mexico host England at the Azteca on Monday. Argentina and Colombia play their ties on Friday.

Later. Peru proclaims its president-elect on Friday, July 3. Mexico City’s concert month rolls on with RÜFÜS DU SOL on Saturday.

04Art & Culture

São Paulo’s Anime Friends runs through July 5 at the Distrito Anhembi, Latin America’s biggest Asian pop-culture festival. Mexico City’s winter concert calendar picks up with RÜFÜS DU SOL on Saturday and Caifanes later in the month.

Buenos Aires marks a Charly García tribute on July 4, amid a busy theatre season. Across the region, the World Cup’s knockout nights double as the month’s biggest public events.

05Food & Coffee

On the Caribbean coast, the sargassum season pushes beach days toward the clearer bays and the cenotes inland. Playa del Carmen’s Quinta Avenida cafés and Cancún’s lagoon-side tables are unaffected either way.

In São Paulo, the winter chill is peak season for the ramen houses of Liberdade. Buenos Aires leans into its café-notable culture and long lunches.

06Community & Safety

Riviera Maya. Sargassum is heavy along the open Playa del Carmen and Tulum shoreline, so check the daily seaweed map before a beach day. The clearer water is generally in Cancún’s sheltered bays and off Isla Mujeres.

Peru. With Friday’s proclamation confirmed, protests remain possible around government buildings in central Lima. Avoid demonstrations and allow extra time near the historic centre.

Mexico City. The Azteca hosts Mexico against England on Monday, so expect heavy crowds and transport demand around the stadium and the Zócalo. The emergency number is 911 and the tap water is not safe to drink.
