Wednesday, May 6, 2026 · Covering close of Tuesday, May 5, 2026, 17:00 BRT

The Ibovespa rose 0.62% to 186,753.82 on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, lifted by Ambev’s first-quarter beat and a 3.99% drop in Brent crude to US$109.87, even as Itaú reported R$12.3 billion in recurring profit, missing the R$12.5 billion analyst estimate compiled by LSEG.

The real strengthened 1.12% to R$4.9123 against the dollar, the lowest closing level since January 26, 2024, with the U.S. currency now down 10.51% year-to-date. Trading volume reached R$26.2 billion, above the 30-session average, according to CNN Brasil.

The session high at 187,427 tested but failed to reclaim the daily Kijun at 187,197 — leaving the index 443 points below the technical pivot that has defined the correction since the April 14 all-time high.

The Big Three

Ibovespa Performance

The session’s gains concentrated in beverages and consumer-defensive names after Ambev’s first-quarter results topped expectations on stronger Brazilian beer volumes. Ágora/Bradesco BBI noted the result was driven by the domestic beer division, which Bradesco analysts said improved overall earnings quality. The blue-chip rally was partially offset by Itaú’s R$12.3 billion recurring profit, a 10.4% year-on-year gain that nonetheless missed the R$12.5 billion consensus from LSEG-compiled analyst estimates. BB Investimentos issued sell recommendations on Itaú (ITUB4), Bradesco (BBDC4), and Vale (VALE3) in a note circulated during the session. Bradesco’s Bradsaúde unit (SAUD3) debuted on the B3 alongside the bank’s reported Q1 net income of R$3.89 billion, a 2.1% year-on-year increase.

Globally, the S&P 500 advanced 0.81% on improved risk appetite. HSBC reported Q1 net income of US$6.94 billion, just 0.1% above the prior-year quarter and below the US$7.02 billion estimate compiled by Visible Alpha. The Brent crude decline to US$109.87 — its largest single-day percentage drop since the April 30 reversal — supported the broader risk-on trade, even as U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that the ceasefire with Iran “is not over” despite reciprocal naval gunfire in the Persian Gulf.

Ibovespa daily chart May 6, 2026: index closed at 186,753.82 up 0.62 percent on May 5, with the intraday high at 187,427 rejected at the Kijun resistance at 187,197

Real at 2-Year High — USD/BRL Daily

USD BRL daily chart May 6, 2026: dollar at R$4.9087 lowest since January 26, 2024, RSI at 34.99 deeply oversold

The dollar closed at R$4.9123 on the venda quote — the lowest closing level since January 26, 2024, when the pair touched R$4.9110. The TradingView ICE close at R$4.9087 marks the same milestone. Bruno Shahini, investment specialist at Nomad, told CNN Brasil that the real’s strength reflected commercial inflows favored by Brent above US$110 (improving Brazil’s terms of trade) combined with financial flows attracted by the elevated rate differential. RSI at 34.99 with signal at 32.63 confirms deeply oversold conditions, though the MACD histogram at +0.0001 has just turned positive after months below zero. The DXY traded near 98 in international markets.

What Drove the Tape

Three forces aligned to lift the index. First, the Brent decline of 3.99% to US$109.87 reduced inflation pressure on the BCB’s calculus and improved sentiment after Hegseth’s “ceasefire is not over” framing was read as conciliatory by GT Capital strategist Nicolas Gass. Second, the Copom minutes from the April 29 decision were described as “serene” by Bradesco economists, who told clients the central bank appears confident that the 14.50% Selic is restrictive and is producing the intended effect. Third, the rate differential — with Brazil at 14.50% versus the Federal Reserve’s 3.50–3.75% range — continues to attract carry-trade flows, helping push the real to R$4.91.

The DI futures curve closed mixed: the short-end Jan-2027 contract fell 6 basis points to 14.140% while long-dated maturities posted small gains. Money Times reported that Planner rotated 80% of its dividend portfolio for May, removing Bradesco (BBDC4), CPFL Energia (CPFE3), Iguatemi (IGTI11), and Isa Energia (ISAE4). The session also saw the Federal Police execute the fourth phase of Operation Unha e Carne, with state deputy Thiago Rangel (Avante) among the arrest targets in a Rio state contract-fraud probe.
