São Paulo Daily Brief for Thursday, April 9, 2026

Welcome to your São Paulo daily guide for Thursday, April 9, 2026. The ceasefire arrived. The US and Iran announced a truce yesterday, and markets erupted: the Ibovespa surged 2.09% to 192,201 — an all-time closing record, surpassing 193,000 intraday. Oil crashed (WTI −16.4% to US$94). Vale, Itaú, and B3 led the rally. Petrobras fell sharply on the oil collapse. Volume hit R$42.5 billion. Bitcoin jumped 7% to US$72,700. Both the MASP and Pinacoteca are open today. At the CCSP, Sheyla Ayo has 10 days remaining. The weather is cool at 25°C with 40% rain — layers and umbrella. The 39-day war that dominated markets, oil prices, and inflation expectations has paused.

This is part of The Rio Times’ daily São Paulo daily guide coverage for expats and the international community.

06Practical InfoESSENTIALS

Ceasefire implications: The US-Iran truce is a 45-day ceasefire with Ormuz reopening. Oil crashed 16% in a single session. If the ceasefire holds, expect fuel prices to ease in the coming weeks, airline fares to stabilise (the QAV +55% hike from April 1 may partially reverse), and inflation pressures to moderate. The Copom’s April 28–29 meeting may face a very different outlook.

Dollar: The real should strengthen further as geopolitical risk premiums unwind. The dollar was at R$5.15 before the ceasefire — expect further appreciation as oil falls and foreign capital flows accelerate.

07Community & LifestyleEXPAT LIFE

Weekend plan: Friday at 22°C/10% — coolest, driest day, ideal for Ibirapuera. Saturday at 23°C/20% — Pinacoteca free day. Sunday at 26°C/10% — Paulista Aberta + Feira da Liberdade + MASP. The best three-day weekend outlook in weeks.

Sheyla Ayo countdown: 10 days remaining at the CCSP (closes April 19). Free admission on Piso Flávio de Carvalho. If you have not visited, plan for this week or next.

08Game DaySPORT

Brasileirão Round 10 fixtures expected this week. Palmeiras and São Paulo lead the table on 16 points. Full schedule at The Rio Times sports coverage.

09Business & MarketsFINANCE

Vale, Itaú, and B3 surged. Petrobras fell sharply on the oil collapse. Volume R$42.5 billion (vs R$35B average). Bitcoin +7% to US$72,700.

Context: Selic at 14.75%. The ceasefire changes the inflation outlook — oil drop may ease IPCA pressures. Focus IPCA 2026 at 4.36% (pre-ceasefire). Next Copom: April 28–29 — may now consider a more favourable scenario. For full analysis, see today’s Brazil Morning Call.
