A new project launches at the Blue Note Rio tonight that will define the club’s Wednesday identity for the rest of the year. Cine Jazz is an immersive series that unites cinema and live instrumental music: each edition screens a landmark jazz concert film, followed by a lecture and debate, and closes with a 30-minute pocket show from a guest artist from Brazil’s contemporary instrumental scene. The April programme is dedicated to the centenary of two of the most important figures in the history of jazz: Miles Davis (born May 26, 1926) and John Coltrane (born September 23, 1926). Tonight’s premiere screens the Miles Davis & The Gil Evans Orchestra film from New York, 1959 — the year Davis recorded Kind of Blue, the year the Davis-Evans partnership produced some of the most significant orchestral jazz ever committed to tape. Guest artist Diogo Gomes follows the screening with a workshop-debate and a live set. From 8 pm.

The calçadão and piano bar open from 5 pm — free entry, the Copacabana oceanfront, the pre-Cine Jazz drinks. The bossa nova connection is not incidental: the Bip Bip’s Wednesday bossa nova roda, five minutes on foot, plays the genre that grew from the same late-1950s Rio that Davis and Evans were recording across the Atlantic. Two expressions of the same era on a single Wednesday night.

Samba · Gafieira · Reopens

The Rio Scenarium reopens tonight for the first time since Easter Saturday’s peak night — the three-storey casarão on Rua do Lavradio returns to its Wednesday–Saturday programme. Wednesday at the Scenarium is the gentlest night of the week: the crowd is smaller, the three floors are navigable, and the samba plays to a midweek audience that has chosen to be here rather than been swept in by Saturday’s momentum. Cover approximately R$30–40. The night runs 7 pm to 1 am. Book via Sympla or arrive before 8 pm for a table. The Scenarium on a Wednesday is one of the best entry points for first-time visitors — the full experience without the Saturday crush.

Bossa Nova · Pavement · Free

Wednesday at the Bip Bip is bossa nova night — the genre that was born on these Copacabana streets in the late 1950s, when Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, Carlos Lyra and Roberto Menescal gathered at Nara Leão’s apartment to create a sound that would change Brazilian music forever. The pavement roda begins from 8 pm — acoustic guitar, voice, the melodic restraint and harmonic sophistication that define bossa nova at its purest. The format is unchanged since 1968: unplugged, audience in respectful silence, cold beer from the fridge, honour-system payment. Tonight, with the Cine Jazz screening the Miles Davis & Gil Evans 1959 film at the Blue Note five minutes away, the bossa nova roda plays the genre that grew from the same creative moment — the late 1950s when both jazz and Brazilian music were reinventing themselves simultaneously. Wednesday at the Carioca da Gema is the midweek entry point to the Lapa circuit — the colonial room on Av. Mem de Sá fills gently from early evening and the main show runs from approximately 8:30 pm. The Wednesday crowd is local, attentive, and smaller than the Thursday–Saturday crush. Check Sympla for tonight’s specific act. Three-minute walk from the Beco do Rato. Five minutes from the Scenarium via Rua do Lavradio. The Gema-Scenarium-Beco triangle operates at full capacity tonight for the first time since Easter.

The Beco do Rato runs its Wednesday format: courtyard samba, no cover, kitchen open, midnight close. The Wednesday Beco is the starting point for visitors exploring the Lapa triangle — from the Beco, three minutes to the Gema on Mem de Sá, five minutes to the Scenarium on Lavradio. Nova Capela on Av. Mem de Sá, 96 keeps the late kitchen — cabrito assado, cold chope, the anchor. The full Lapa circuit runs tonight: Scenarium + Gema + Beco + Nova Capela. The first full Wednesday since Easter.
