Rio de Janeiro Daily Brief for Wednesday, March 18, 2026

Welcome to your Rio de Janeiro daily guide for Wednesday, March 18, 2026 — the day Brazil’s monetary policy could shift for the first time in nine months. The Copom announces its Selic decision this evening, with markets pricing a 0.25 pp cut to 14.75% as the base case, though growing oil-driven inflation pressure has fuelled talk of a hold. The Federal Reserve also delivers its verdict today. Yesterday’s session was cautious: the Ibovespa edged up 0.30% to 180,410 while the dollar slipped to R$ 5.21. In Rio, Wednesday means the CCBB reopens after its Tuesday closure, while the MAR takes its weekly rest. Expect partly cloudy skies and a high of 28 °C.

This is part of The Rio Times’ daily Rio de Janeiro daily guide coverage for expats and the international community.

Wednesday opens partly cloudy at 22 °C and climbs to a comfortable 28 °C by early afternoon, with just 10% rain probability. Thursday stays dry and slightly cooler, but Friday brings the week’s weather shift — a 60% chance of rain and highs dropping to 26 °C. Today is another solid outdoor day in Rio: sunglasses, SPF, and light clothing. A compact umbrella might be worth tucking into your bag as a precaution for late-afternoon clouds, but rain is unlikely.

Where to Eat
Where to eat

Centro (near CCBB): The streets around Rua Primeiro de Março and Praça XV serve classic Rio luncheonettes with prato feito at accessible prices. The CCBB’s own café is a good option for a quick break between exhibitions. Many Centro restaurants close by 16h.

Saúde/port district: If you want something beyond the traditional Centro options, walk north along Rua Sacadura Cabral toward Praça Mauá for newer restaurants born from the port revitalisation.

Gávea/Jardim Botânico: The gallery district’s side streets — Rua Pacheco Leão, Rua Jardim Botânico — have excellent lunch spots from casual bistros to contemporary Brazilian fare.

Imposto de Renda 2026: Filing period begins this Sunday, March 23. The Receita Federal has confirmed the rules and deadlines — expats with Brazilian tax obligations should begin gathering documentation now.

Community & Lifestyle
Local life

The Neymar debate continues to dominate conversation two days after Ancelotti’s squad announcement. Santos supporters are divided between those who see the exclusion as a wake-up call and those who view it as the end of an era. Brazilian media is running wall-to-wall coverage on the squad selection, with the friendlies against France (March 26) and Croatia taking on added significance as the final audition before the World Cup roster is finalised.

The Mercosul–EU trade agreement continues to advance: Congress began the promulgation session this week with Vice President Alckmin participating, signalling the deal’s growing momentum.

Expat community events: language exchanges and coworking meetups continue across Botafogo and Leblon. Check InterNations and local Facebook groups for Wednesday evening options.

08
Game Day
Game day

Brasileirão Série A: No fixtures today. Round 7 begins tomorrow (Thursday, March 19). Check CBF schedule for Flamengo and Fluminense matchday details.

Round 6 final result (Monday): Chapecoense 1–1 Grêmio (Arena Condá). The early table remains tight — São Paulo leads, with Flamengo in the top five.

Seleção update: Ancelotti’s 26-player squad for Brazil vs France (Mar 26) and Brazil vs Croatia continues to generate debate. Flamengo trio Alex Sandro, Danilo, and Léo Pereira are all in camp. Neymar’s exclusion remains the headline.

09
Business & Markets
Market watch

Tuesday close (Mar 17): The Ibovespa added 0.30% to close at 180,410 points in a cautious session ahead of today’s rate decisions. Volume was subdued as traders positioned for the Copom and Fed. The USD/BRL fell to R$ 5.21, extending the real’s recovery from last week’s highs above R$ 5.30.

Copom decision tonight: The Selic stands at 15.00%. The base case remains a 0.25 pp cut to 14.75%, but the probability of a hold has risen in the last 48 hours as Brent crude surged above $104 on Tuesday (up 4.1%), reviving inflation fears. The Copom is expected to signal a data-dependent path regardless of direction. The decision is typically announced around 18h30 BRT.

Fed decision (15h BRT): The Federal Reserve is expected to hold its rate at 3.50%–3.75%. Chair Powell’s press conference will be closely watched for any shift in forward guidance amid Middle East–related inflation pressure.

Focus recap (Mar 16): IPCA inflation 4.10% (up sharply from 3.91%), Selic year-end 12.25%, GDP 1.83%, USD/BRL R$ 5.40. The inflation jump — the biggest single-week move in recent Focus history — adds pressure to the Copom’s deliberations.

Oil: Brent closed Tuesday at $104.33, up 4.1% on the session. Iran’s threat to target vessels transiting Hormuz continues to sustain elevated prices, though actual shipping disruption has been limited so far. WTI closed at $97.79.
