Bar Brahma at the intersection of São João and Ipiranga is the only music venue open in Centro tonight — and it is the only one that needs to be. The art deco botequim has run since 1948: live samba, cold chopp, the classic paulistano proposition that operates daily from 11 am to 1 am regardless of what the rest of the city is doing. On a Monday when every other venue is dark, Bar Brahma is at its most honest — the room is quieter, the crowd is smaller, the samba plays to people who are here because they want to be here and not because it’s Saturday and everything is open. No cover, no reservation needed. The chopps arrive fast. The music is live and present. This is what São Paulo sounds like when it isn’t performing.

Metro República. Walk from the station through Praça da República — five minutes. The São João / Ipiranga intersection is one of the most iconic corners in São Paulo, immortalised in Caetano Veloso’s “Sampa.” On a Monday evening it’s quieter than the weekend — the city at its most walkable.

Monday in Pinheiros is the neighbourhood at rest. The Borogodó is closed. The music venues are dark. But the restaurants on Mourato Coelho, Aspicuelta, and the surrounding streets are open, and on a mild Monday evening (26 °C, partly cloudy) the dinner circuit operates at its most relaxed. Tables are available everywhere. The streets are walkable without the weekend crowds. The Pinheiros Monday is for people who want the neighbourhood’s food without its noise — the Japanese izakayas on Rua dos Pinheiros, the Italian tratorias on Aspicuelta, the corner botecos that are most themselves when nobody is waiting in line. Vila Madalena spills over from Pinheiros on every other night — but on Monday it operates independently, quietly, as the bohemian neighbourhood it was before the weekend nightlife boom.
