The Friday late show at the Blue Note Rio belongs to “O Brilho da Malacaxêta — Tributo a Pepeu, Moraes e muito mais!” at 10:30 pm. The show is a celebration of Pepeu Gomes — recognised as one of the greatest guitarists in Brazilian history and in the world — extending to his partnership with Moraes Moreira and the extraordinary period with the Novos Baianos, Gilberto Gil (with whom Pepeu served as guitarist), and the sister group A Cor do Som. Pepeu is an exceptional composer and hitmaker whose songs dominated radio and novela soundtracks through the 1980s and 90s — including “Menino do Rio,” written by Caetano Veloso, interpreted by Baby do Brasil (then Baby Consuêlo), and arranged by Pepeu. Moraes Moreira — genial violonista with a unique style of playing what he called his “legítimo violão popular” — composed soundtracks for novelas, commercials, and TV programmes, including the opening of “A Turma do Pererê” on TV Cultura. Together and separately, they built a catalogue that spans tropicália, samba, rock, baião, and the communal experiments that redefined Brazilian music in the 1970s.

Friday at the Rio Scenarium matches Saturday for intensity. The three-storey casarão on Rua do Lavradio fills from early evening — the ground floor samba, the upper floors with DJs and lounge atmosphere, the antique-filled rooms at their most atmospheric when packed with a crowd that carries Friday energy. Cover R$40–60. Book via Sympla or arrive before 8 pm for a table — after that, standing only. The Scenarium on a Friday night is one of Rio’s defining experiences: the casarão glows, the samba hits hard, the crowd dances on three floors until past 2 am. The kitchen runs all night.

Friday at the Carioca da Gema rivals Saturday for energy. The colonial room on Av. Mem de Sá fills from early evening and the main show at 8:30 pm plays to a crowd at peak Friday intensity. The samba hits harder than any other night except Saturday. The dance floor stays packed. Friday is the best night to test the Gema-to-Scenarium-to-Beco crawl — or to start at the Gema and end with the Brilho da Malacaxêta at the Blue Note’s 10:30 pm session. Friday at the Beco do Rato matches Saturday for hours — 6 pm to 2 am. The alleyway on Rua Joaquim Silva fills after 10 pm with the same spill-out energy as every peak night: the crowd from the Scenarium, the post-Gema wave, the neighbourhood regulars who have been here since 6. The 1 am set is when the Beco is at its most concentrated. No cover. Cold chope. Kitchen open. Nova Capela on Av. Mem de Sá, 96 keeps the late kitchen — cabrito assado after the last set ends.
