01
Tonight’s Vibe Menu
Wednesday is when Rio de Janeiro nightlife reaches critical mass for the week, and tonight the circuit fires on all cylinders. At Blue Note Rio, Delia Fischer premieres “Solar” — her first-ever solo format, piano and voice only, no band, no safety net. Fischer is a two-time Latin Grammy nominee for Best Brazilian MPB Album, a pianist who studied under Cesar Guerra-Peixe and Luiz Eça of the Tamba Trio, a composer whose songs have been recorded by Milton Nascimento, and a musical director who earned the Prêmio Shell for Beatles Num Céu de Diamantes. Tonight she strips all of that back to its simplest form: one piano, one voice, and a repertoire that draws from Milton, Beto Guedes, Lô Borges, Guilherme Arantes, Caetano, Gil, the Beatles, and brand-new compositions written with some of those same artists. Sound design by Matias Correa creates loops and effects that make the solo format feel orchestral. At 10:30 pm, Will Magalhães Quarteto presents “Impressões” with special guests Christian Lettner and Matthias Bublath — two Munich-based jazz musicians joining the Brazilian quartet for a transatlantic conversation. In Lapa, the full triangle is back: Rio Scenarium reopens for the week from 7 pm, Carioca da Gema runs its Wednesday session, Beco do Rato from 6 pm. This is part of The Rio Times’ daily Rio de Janeiro nightlife coverage for expats and visitors. Mostly sunny — 30 °C, 10 % rain. The hottest night of the week.

1Blue Note Rio — Delia Fischer · “Solar”

MPB · Piano & Voice

The word “solar” carries a double meaning in Fischer’s title. In Portuguese it evokes sunlight, warmth, the cycle of light across a day. In jazz argot it means the soloist — the improviser who steps out alone. Both definitions apply. Delia Fischer has spent decades building her reputation in ensemble settings: nine solo albums, two Latin Grammy nominations, collaborations with Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal, Toninho Horta, Milton Nascimento, Ed Motta. She directed the music for Beatles Num Céu de Diamantes (Prêmio Shell) and Elis, a Musical (Prêmio Cesgranrio). Tonight she sets all of that aside and stands alone at the piano. The repertoire pulls from the MPB canon — Milton, Beto Guedes, Lô Borges, Guilherme Arantes, Caetano, Gil — alongside Beatles reinterpretations and brand-new compositions written with some of those same artists. Sound designer Matias Correa adds live loops and effects that expand the solo format into something immersive. This is the show’s world premiere. Part of the Mês das Mulheres final week. UBC and WME 50 % discounts apply.

Wed 8 pm · Premiere · Eventim
Av. Atlântica, 1910 – Copacabana
Mês das Mulheres · Latin Grammy nominee

2Blue Note Rio — Will Magalhães Quarteto · “Impressões”

Jazz · Quarteto · International

The late session pivots from Fischer’s solo intimacy to a quintet conversation that crosses continents. Will Magalhães Quarteto presents “Impressões” with special participation from Munich-based drummer Christian Lettner and keyboardist Matthias Bublath. The project bridges Brazilian jazz with the European improvisation tradition — Lettner and Bublath bring the harmonic language of the Munich scene into dialogue with Brazilian rhythmic vocabulary. This is the kind of late session the Blue Note Rio does best: a smaller crowd, a more attentive room, and musicians pushing each other into territory that neither side would reach alone.

Wed 10:30 pm · Late session · Eventim
Av. Atlântica, 1910 – Copacabana
With Christian Lettner + Matthias Bublath (Munich)

3Rio Scenarium — The Wednesday Return

Samba · Gafieira · Choro

Wednesday is when the Scenarium reopens for the week, and the energy on Rua do Lavradio shifts from quiet to alive. The three-storey 19th-century casarão — antique-filled, Guardian top-10-listed, with samba and choro on the main stage and gafieira dancing on the floor — runs from 7 pm to 1 am. Wednesday is the gentlest night of the Scenarium’s four-night run: the crowd is smaller than Thursday or Friday, the cover is typically ~R$30, and the atmosphere retains an intimacy that the weekend strips away. The seven environments across three floors fill gradually — arrive at 8 pm and you will have your pick of tables. By 10 pm the dance floor starts to move. Check @rioscenarium for tonight’s specific lineup.

Wed 7 pm–1 am · Cover ~R$30 · Sympla
R. do Lavradio, 20 – Centro
3 floors · 7 environments · Gafieira dancing

4Carioca da Gema — Wednesday Samba

Samba · MPB

Wednesday at the Gema is the second night of the weekly run, and the energy steps up from Tuesday’s restart. The Happy Hour format holds — free entry from 6:30 pm, dose dupla caipirinha de limão, Original at R$12.99, 50 % off petiscos — and the main show takes the stage at 8:30 pm. Wednesday crowds are still manageable: better tables, easier bar access, and the three-room casarão on Mem de Sá at a comfortable density. The walk from Carioca da Gema to Rio Scenarium takes five minutes — the two venues pair naturally on a Wednesday when both are running.

Wed doors 7:30 pm · Show 8:30 pm
Av. Mem de Sá, 79 – Lapa
HH free 6:30–8:30 · Caipirinha · Original R$12.99

5Beco do Rato — The Alleyway Constant

Samba · Botequim · Free

Wednesday at Beco do Rato runs the same midnight close as Tuesday — tighter than the Thursday-through-Saturday stretch that pushes to 1 or 2 am. The bar on Rua Joaquim Silva has been open every single day since 2005, and its value on a Wednesday night is not as a destination but as a connective tissue: the stop between the Carioca da Gema Happy Hour and the Rio Scenarium main stage, or the late-evening wind-down after both. No cover. Cold beer. Samba de raiz. The street fills after 9 pm on Wednesdays when both neighbouring venues are running.

Wed 6 pm–midnight · No cover
R. Joaquim Silva, 11 – Lapa
Samba de raiz · Every day since 2005
