The Blue Note Rio’s Mês das Mulheres programme — now in its third consecutive year — reaches its second week tonight with Yumi Park, a South Korean-born singer and instrumentalist who has made Rio de Janeiro her home for two decades. Trained through a master’s programme at UFRJ and deeply embedded in the city’s instrumental scene, Park brings “(Des)Construção,” the show built around her EP of the same name. The six-track record draws on compositions by Edu Lobo, Vinícius de Moraes, Dori Caymmi and Danilo Caymmi alongside newer work by Paulo Francisco Paes, a pianist and composer of the younger generation. The arrangements are by Renan Francioni, who signs the sonic identity of the show: improvisation-first, rhythmically elegant, bridging the samba jazz tradition with contemporary instrumental composition. Beyond the EP material, expect bossa nova and samba jazz standards reinterpreted with freshness and depth. One session tonight at 8 pm — this is a weekday single-session format. Wednesday is bossa nova night at the Bip Bip — the only surviving weekly bossa nova roda in Rio de Janeiro. The tiny bar on Rua Almirante Gonçalves, 50, in Copacabana has held this rotation since 1968: Tuesday for choro, Wednesday for bossa nova, Thursday and Sunday for samba. The format is unchanged: musicians gather from 8 pm, instruments unplugged, and play into the night on the pavement while the audience listens in respectful silence — snapping fingers instead of clapping, helping themselves to a beer from the fridge, settling the bill on departure. The bossa nova repertoire centres on Tom Jobim, Vinícius de Moraes, Carlos Lyra, Roberto Menescal and the canonical songbook, but the specific interpretations depend on who arrives to play. Tonight’s pairing with the Yumi Park show at the Blue Note is thematic as well as geographic: both celebrate the bossa nova and samba jazz tradition, five minutes apart on foot. Walk to the Bip Bip before the 8 pm Blue Note session, or after the show ends around 9:30 pm — the roda typically runs past 11 pm. No cover. The venue occupies a nineteenth-century casarão on Rua do Lavradio, 20, in Lapa — three floors of antique furniture, vintage décor and over ten thousand curated objects that double as set pieces and conversation starters. Elected one of the ten best bars in the world by The Guardian, the Scenarium’s Palco Scenarium hosts two live sets per night across samba, MPB, choro and gafieira, with a DJ set on the Palco Dolores mezzanine from later in the evening. The kitchen runs full Brazilian fare alongside cold chope and caipirinhas. Wednesday cover is typically R$30. Doors from 7 pm. The Carioca da Gema on Avenida Mem de Sá, 79, continues its regular midweek programming tonight with Leonardo Bessa on the main stage. The house has been presenting live samba and MPB since 2000 in a restored two-storey colonial building on the avenue that defines the Lapa musical corridor. Wednesday nights follow the same format as Tuesday: doors at 7:30 pm, show from 8:30 pm, a single set that typically runs until close to midnight. The crowd is lighter than the double-bill nights from Thursday onward, which rewards a more intimate gathering in the colonial room. The kitchen runs bolinho de bacalhau, casquinha, pernil sandwiches and a chocolate tart alongside cold chope and caipirinhas. Cover charge applies — reserve through the Fever app for a table, walk-ins seated from 7:30 pm. Wednesday is the night when the Lapa midweek circuit gains its first real momentum — with Rio Scenarium and the Carioca da Gema both active, the neighbourhood hums in a way that Monday and Tuesday cannot match. The courtyard stays open with live samba from the evening, no cover charge, and the kitchen running pastéis de angu and boteco standards. Founded in 2005 by Márcio Pacheco, the house divides into three areas: an indoor salão with murals of Pixinguinha and Noel Rosa, a covered terrace, and the open-air courtyard.
