Rio de Janeiro Daily Brief for Wednesday, February 25, 2026

Welcome to your Rio de Janeiro daily brief for Wednesday, February 25, 2026 — a strong cultural day in the Cidade Maravilhosa. The CCBB and MAM both reopen after their Tuesday closures, offering two of the best free exhibitions in the city: Vetores-Vertentes at the CCBB brings 170 works by 11 Amazonian women photographers in an immersive show curated by Sissa Aneleh, while Daniel Buren’s first Brazilian installation transforms the MAM’s modernist architecture with his signature coloured stripes. Note that the MAR takes its weekly rest today — it reopens Thursday. The Museu do Amanhã is open across Praça Mauá (R$30). The weather cooperates: 29°C with just 25% rain makes this the week’s best window for outdoor plans. On the markets, B3 delivered a landmark session yesterday — the Ibovespa closed at 191,490, its first close above 191k and 13th record of 2026, while the dollar fell to R$5.1556. Trump’s 10% global tariff under Section 122 took effect at midnight in Washington, well below the 15% he had threatened. Looking ahead to tomorrow night: Flamengo host Lanús at the Maracanã for the Recopa Sul-Americana final second leg, needing a two-goal win to lift the trophy. This Rio de Janeiro daily brief covers weather, events, transport, food, and practical tips for your day.

MAM Rio — Open Today

Av. Infante Dom Henrique 85, Flamengo — Wed–Sat 10h–18h, Sun 10h–18h — Free

Museu do Amanhã — Open Today

Praça Mauá 1, Centro — Tue–Sun 10h–18h — R$30

Note that the former free-Tuesday policy was discontinued in April 2025 — the museum now offers free admission only on national holidays. Half-price for students and under-21s. Combine with the VLT (Parada dos Museus stop) for an easy cultural itinerary — though note the MAR across the square is closed today.

Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) — Closed Today

Praça Mauá 5, Centro — Thu–Tue 11h–18h — R$20 (Free Tuesdays)

The MAR is closed every Wednesday. It reopens tomorrow (Thursday) at 11h with full programming. Free admission is on Tuesdays only. The rooftop terrace remains one of the best viewpoints in Centro — plan your MAR visit for Thursday or next Tuesday if you want the free entry.

The city is building towards tomorrow’s Recopa final. Flamengo merchandise is ubiquitous, and bar talk has shifted from Carnaval to whether Filipe Luís can engineer a comeback. Expect increased noise and energy in Zona Norte and Centro from this evening

Recopa Sul-Americana — Tomorrow

Flamengo v Lanús — Thu 26 Feb, 21h30, Maracanã
Recopa Sul-Americana final, second leg. Lanús won the ida 1-0 in Buenos Aires (Rodrigo Castillo 31’/2T). Flamengo needs a two-goal win in normal time to lift the trophy outright; a one-goal win forces extra time and potentially penalties. Filipe Luís is expected to start Rossi; Varela, Léo Ortiz, Léo Pereira, Alex Sandro; Paquetá, Pulgar; Carrascal, Arrascaeta, Cebolinha; Pedro. Plata returns from suspension. Bruno Henrique is out (pubis). Lanús have no confirmed absences. This is Flamengo’s biggest match of the season — the Maracanã is expected to be near capacity. TV: ESPN / Disney+.

Brasileirão Série A — Round 4 Tonight

Match Time Venue
RB Bragantino v Athletico-PR 19h Cícero de Souza Marques, Bragança
Remo v Internacional 19h Mangueirão, Belém
Coritiba v São Paulo 19h30 Couto Pereira, Curitiba
Cruzeiro v Corinthians 20h Mineirão, Belo Horizonte
Palmeiras v Fluminense 21h30 Arena Barueri, SP
Grêmio v Atlético-MG 21h30 Arena do Grêmio, Porto Alegre

The Brasileirão returns from its Carnaval pause tonight with six matches. The headline for Rio fans is Palmeiras v Fluminense at Arena Barueri (21h30), marking Jhon Arias’s return to face his former club — Flu travel to São Paulo sitting on 7 points from 3 games. No Rio clubs play at home tonight. Tomorrow: Santos v Vasco at Vila Belmiro (19h) — Vasco’s first match under interim coach Bruno Lazaroni after Fernando Diniz was sacked following last Sunday’s Cariocão semifinal. Three matches are postponed: Flamengo v Mirassol (Recopa), Botafogo v Vitória, and Bahia v Chapecoense.

Cariocão — Semifinal Volta Schedule

The Cariocão semifinal second legs are set for the first weekend of March. Fluminense v Vasco: Sun 1 Mar, 18h, Maracanã (Flu mando — Flu lead 1-0, needs only a draw). Madureira v Flamengo: Mon 2 Mar, 21h, Maracanã (Madureira mando — Fla lead 3-0 from the ida). The single-match final will follow at a date and venue to be confirmed by FERJ.

09Business & MarketsMarket watch

Ibovespa: closed Tuesday at 191,490.40 (+1.40%) — first-ever close above 191k, 13th record of 2026. Intraday high: 191,780.77 (also a record). Volume: R$32.98 billion
USD/BRL: R$5.1556 (-0.27%) — lowest closing price since May 28, 2024. YTD decline: -6.07%. Strong foreign inflows continue to support the real
US tariffs: Trump’s 10% global tariff under Section 122 took effect at midnight Tuesday in Washington. The rate came in below the 15% Trump had promised on Saturday — the CBP confirmed the 10% rate, with no timeline yet for the threatened increase. The 150-day clock is now running
Top movers Tuesday: IRB +7.26%, Natura +6.40%, Vamos +6.40%. Petrobras, Vale and Itaú led the blue-chip rally. Losers: Minerva -4.43%, Gerdau Metalúrgica -2.46% (weak Q4 results)
Selic: 15.00%. Copom next meets March 18–19. Foreign inflows into B3 equities: R$35.6 billion YTD through Feb 20. Analysts at Itaú BBA see the index targeting 200k

Market context: The Ibovespa is being driven by a historic wave of foreign capital — fund managers are rotating out of US tech and into emerging-market equities, with Brazil capturing roughly a fifth of Latin American inflows. The 10% tariff that took effect yesterday is significantly below the 50% that had been imposed on Brazilian exports under the now-invalidated IEEPA regime, which is net positive for Brazilian exporters. Embraer benefits from an explicit aerospace exemption. The effective US tariff rate has fallen from 13.6% to about 10.2% according to Bloomberg Economics. The question now is whether Trump will sign a separate order raising the rate to 15%, which is the Section 122 maximum.

10Plan AheadPlan ahead

The Week Ahead
Thu Feb 26 — Flamengo v Lanús (Recopa Sul-Americana final volta, Maracanã, 21h30). Santos v Vasco (Brasileirão R4, Vila Belmiro, 19h — Lazaroni’s first match as interim coach)
Fri Feb 27 — Plebe Rude at Circo Voador (Lapa, 20h) — 45 years of Brasília punk. Frestas Trienal de Artes opens at Sesc Sorocaba (80+ artists)
Sat Feb 28 — CCBB Educativo: mini bloco Breque no Piripaque (14h, CCBB foyer) — a Carnaval-themed children’s parade celebrating 10 years of the Projeto Roda de Palhaço
Sun Mar 1 — Cariocão semifinal volta: Fluminense v Vasco (Maracanã, 18h). Flu lead 1-0
Mon Mar 2 — Cariocão semifinal volta: Madureira v Flamengo (Maracanã, 21h). Fla lead 3-0
Looking further — Vetores-Vertentes at CCBB runs through March 30. Copom meets March 18–19 (Selic decision). Cariocão final TBC by FERJ
Looking ahead: Tomorrow is the headline event of the week and arguably the most important match of Flamengo’s 2026 season so far. The Maracanã under lights for a continental final is always electric, and the 0-1 deficit adds genuine jeopardy. For those not attending, bars across Zona Sul and Centro will be packed from 20h. On Friday, Plebe Rude brings Brasília punk to Circo Voador — a rare chance to see the band on their anniversary tour. The Cariocão semifinal volta matches next weekend will determine whether the final is the expected Flamengo v Fluminense or if Vasco or Madureira can produce a shock. On the markets, all eyes are on whether Trump signs the order to raise tariffs from 10% to 15% — and what that means for the Ibovespa’s run at 200k.
