Rio de Janeiro brief for Tuesday, February 24, 2026

Welcome to your Rio de Janeiro daily brief for Tuesday, February 24, 2026 — the first full working Tuesday after Carnaval. The city is back in routine: banks, courts and government offices are fully operational, B3 opened for its first full week yesterday, and schools resumed across all zones. The weekend closed the Carnaval season definitively — the Desfile das Campeãs packed the Sapucaí on Saturday night, with champion Viradouro closing around 4h40 Sunday morning. On the pitch, the Cariocão semifinals delivered clear results: Flamengo dismantled Madureira 3-0 at the Maracanã (De La Cruz, Arrascaeta’s 100th Fla goal, Luiz Araújo), while Fluminense edged Vasco 1-0 at the Nilton Santos (Kevin Serna 31′), prompting the immediate sacking of Fernando Diniz. At the Jockey Club, Etcheverry won the Rio Open singles and Fonseca/Melo took the doubles for Brazil. All eyes turn to Thursday, when Flamengo host Lanús at the Maracanã for the Recopa Sul-Americana final. This Rio de Janeiro daily brief covers weather, events, transport, food, and practical tips for your day.

The post-Carnaval reset is complete. Rio has settled back into routine — banks, courts and government offices are at full capacity, schools are in session, and the Sapucaí dismantling crews are clearing the last of the infrastructure. For culture-seekers, Tuesday is MAR day: the Museu de Arte do Rio opens its doors for free, making it the best pairing with the Museu do Amanhã across Praça Mauá (R$30). Note that CCBB and MAM are both shuttered today but reopen Wednesday with strong programming — Vetores-Vertentes at CCBB and Daniel Buren’s installation at MAM are the current standouts. Viradouro’s perfect-score Carnaval title is still the talk of the city, and the Desfile das Campeãs drew massive crowds Saturday night. Look ahead to Friday for Plebe Rude at Circo Voador celebrating 45 years of Brasília punk. Expect afternoon showers — the umbrella is non-negotiable today.

The MAR reopens after the Carnaval period with free admission every Tuesday. The rooftop terrace offers one of the best views in Centro, looking across the Praça Mauá to the Museu do Amanhã and the Baía de Guanabara. Combine with the VLT (Parada dos Museus stop) for an easy half-day cultural itinerary.

Museu do Amanhã

Praça Mauá 1, Centro — Tue–Sun 10h–18h — R$30

Santiago Calatrava’s futuristic museum is open today with its permanent exhibition and temporary shows. Note that the former free-Tuesday policy was discontinued in April 2025 — the museum now offers free admission only on national holidays. Half-price for students and under-21s.

The CCBB is closed today but returns tomorrow with two standout exhibitions: Vetores-Vertentes, a free photography show featuring 170 works by 11 Amazonian women artists (through March 30), and Viva Maurício de Sousa, an immersive Turma da Mônica experience (through April 13).

Flamengo v Madureira (Sun 20h30) 3–0 De La Cruz 7’/2T, Arrascaeta 18’/2T pen (100th goal), Luiz Araújo 40’/2T. 22,730 present
Semifinals — volta schedule: Fluminense v Vasco on Sun 1 Mar, 18h at Maracanã (Flu mando — needs only a draw). Madureira v Flamengo on Mon 2 Mar, 21h at Maracanã (Madureira mando — needs to win by 4+ goals). The final is a single match at a date and venue to be confirmed by FERJ. Before the volta, Flamengo faces Lanús at the Maracanã on Thu 26 Feb at 21h30 for the Recopa Sul-Americana final (lost ida 0-1 in Buenos Aires — needs to win by 2+ goals in normal time to lift the trophy outright).

Brasileirão & Other

Brasileirão Série A Round 4 midweek fixtures begin tomorrow. Key Rio dates: Fluminense at Palmeiras (Arena Barueri, Wed 25, 21h30). Vasco at Santos (Vila Belmiro, Thu 26, 19h) — the first match under interim coach Bruno Lazaroni after Fernando Diniz’s sacking. No home Brasileirão matches for Rio clubs this week. Flamengo vs Mirassol has been postponed due to the Recopa commitment.

09Business & MarketsMarket watch

Ibovespa: closed Friday 20th at 190,534.42 (+1.06%) — first-ever close above 190k, 12th record of 2026. Weekly gain: +2.18% (seventh consecutive positive week). YTD: +18.25%
USD/BRL: R$5.17 (-0.98%) — lowest since May 2024. Dollar weakened globally after the US Supreme Court struck down Trump’s tariffs (6-3 ruling on Friday)
Trump responded with 15% global tariff via executive order under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 — the maximum allowed under that statute, with a 150-day limit unless Congress extends it
Key movers Friday: Financials led — Santander +3.12%, Bradesco +2.02%, BB +2.00%. Vale +3.23% (iron ore strong). Volume: R$36.2 billion (options expiry day)
Selic: 15.00%. Copom next meets March 18–19. Focus survey due today may show reduced expectations for the rate cycle peak

Market context: The Ibovespa’s breakthrough above 190,000 was driven by the US Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling that struck down Trump’s tariffs as an overreach of executive authority. Brazil is among the biggest beneficiaries, as tariffs on Brazilian exports to the US were effectively cancelled. Foreign inflows into Brazilian equities — at R$33+ billion YTD — accelerated. B3 reopened yesterday and is in full session today.

10Plan AheadPlan ahead

The Week Ahead
Wed Feb 25 — CCBB and MAM reopen. Brasileirão R4 begins: Palmeiras vs Fluminense (Arena Barueri, 21h30), Cruzeiro vs Corinthians (Mineirão, 20h)
Thu Feb 26 — Flamengo v Lanús (Recopa Sul-Americana volta, Maracanã, 21h30). Fla lost ida 0-1, needs 2+ goal win. Vasco at Santos (Brasileirão R4, Vila Belmiro, 19h)
Fri Feb 27 — Plebe Rude at Circo Voador (20h) — the legendary Brasília punk band opens a tour celebrating 45 years
Sun Mar 1 — Cariocão semifinal volta: Fluminense v Vasco (Maracanã, 18h, Flu mando)
Mon Mar 2 — Cariocão semifinal volta: Madureira v Flamengo (Maracanã, 21h, Madureira mando)
Looking further — Cariocão final in single match (date/venue TBC by FERJ). Copom Mar 18–19 (potential Selic adjustment after tariff ruling reshapes expectations)
Looking ahead: This is the first full working week since Carnaval, and it is packed. Thursday is the headline date: Flamengo host Lanús at the Maracanã needing a two-goal win to lift the Recopa Sul-Americana — their most important match of the season so far. The Brasileirão picks up pace with seven games across Wednesday and Thursday, including Vasco’s first match under new interim coach Lazaroni. For those who prefer culture over football, the CCBB and MAM reopen tomorrow, and the Plebe Rude show at Circo Voador on Friday promises to be a highlight. The Cariocão semifinal volta matches are set for the first weekend of March, with Flamengo’s 3-0 cushion all but securing their place in the final, while the Fluminense-Vasco return leg promises to be far more combustible.
