Estudiantes Storm Past Newell’s as Medina Debuts With Victory
Football
Alexander Medina’s first match as Estudiantes de La Plata manager could not have gone much better. The Pincha dominated the second half at the Coloso Marcelo Bielsa in Rosario, beating a sinking Newell’s side 2–0 to climb to the top of Zona A alongside Vélez with 15 points. After a tight first half in which Adolfo Gaich threatened twice without reward, Tiago Palacios broke the deadlock at 51 minutes with a crisp left-footed finish after a defensive miscue. Fabricio Pérez sealed the result at 81 minutes with a superb individual effort, controlling at the edge of the area and curling a shot inside the far post. For Newell’s, the crisis deepens — they are last in Zona A with just 2 points from 7 matches, and incoming coach Frank Kudelka, who watched from the stands, must prepare for the Rosario derby against Central on Sunday. Goalkeeper Gabriel Arias was also forced off injured in the second half, casting doubt over his availability for the clásico.

Palmeiras Take Brasileirão Lead With Vitor Roque-Powered Win Over Fluminense
Football
Palmeiras raced into a 2–0 lead inside 13 minutes at Arena Barueri and held off a spirited Fluminense fightback to win 2–1 and move to the top of the Brasileirão table on 10 points. Vitor Roque opened the scoring from the penalty spot at 9 minutes after being fouled in the box — a decision that drew furious Fluminense protests. Allan doubled the advantage four minutes later, driving down the right flank and beating goalkeeper Fábio with a fine finish. Lucho Acosta pulled one back for the Tricolor at 40 minutes, and the visitors pushed hard in the second half — Savarino struck the crossbar and Carlos Miguel was forced into several key saves — but Palmeiras held firm. In the day’s other Brasileirão action, Cruzeiro led Corinthians through Matheus Pereira’s 8th-minute curler only for João Pedro to equalize with a header on 81 minutes to make it 1–1 at the Mineirão, while Grêmio beat Atlético-MG 2–1 at the Arena after Natanael’s 15th-minute red card left the visitors with ten men for 75 minutes.

Botafogo Overturn Deficit; O’Higgins Stun Bahia on Penalties
Football
Two contrasting Libertadores qualifying dramas played out Wednesday night in Brazil. At the Nilton Santos, defending champions Botafogo made quick work of their 1–0 first-leg deficit against Nacional Potosí. Alex Telles equalized the aggregate inside four minutes with a composed finish, and Danilo headed home from a corner deep in first-half stoppage time to make it 2–0 on the night and 2–1 on aggregate. Nacional fought admirably in the second half — Restrepo headed just wide and Villalba’s 25-yard thunderbolt struck the post — but Botafogo held on to advance to the third qualifying round. In Salvador, the shock of the night: Chilean side O’Higgins eliminated Bahia despite a 2–1 second-leg defeat. Willian José struck twice for Bahia (including a first-minute opener) to make the aggregate 2–2, but Arnaldo Castillo’s 54th-minute goal kept O’Higgins alive. In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Omar Carabalí saved two kicks — including Everton Ribeiro’s decisive attempt — as O’Higgins prevailed 4–3 from the spot to advance to the third qualifying round.

Apertura Fecha 7: Central Comeback, Barracas Upset, Vélez Stalled
Football
Wednesday’s Apertura Fecha 7 slate produced comebacks and upsets across both zones. In La Plata, Rosario Central overturned an early deficit to beat Gimnasia 2–1 at El Bosque. Ignacio Fernández — celebrating his return to the club after a decade — scored at 4 minutes for the hosts, but Central struck back in the second half through Enzo Giménez’s clinical counter at 52 minutes and Gastón Ávila’s towering header from a Jaminton Campaz corner at 75 minutes. Central (11 points) arrive at Sunday’s Rosario derby against Newell’s in fine form. In Buenos Aires, Barracas Central rallied from behind to beat third-placed Tigre 2–1 — Ignacio Russo opened for the visitors at 22 minutes, but Fernando Tobio (51′) and Facundo Bruera (54′) scored in quick succession early in the second half. At Liniers, Zona A leaders Vélez were frustrated 0–0 by a deep-lying Deportivo Riestra side whose goalkeeper Ignacio Arce produced the performance of his career, and the Fortín must now share top spot with Estudiantes.

Wu Yibing Upsets Ruud as Acapulco Second Round Takes Shape
Tennis
The upsets keep coming at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel. A day after qualifier Patrick Kypson stunned defending champion Alex de Minaur, China’s Wu Yibing produced a flawless tiebreak performance to knock out third seed Casper Ruud 7–6(2), 7–6(1) on Wednesday night. It was the third Top 20 win of Wu’s career, following victories over Taylor Fritz and Daniil Medvedev. Elsewhere, top seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the Round of 16 where he will face Miomir Kecmanovic, and 38-year-old Gael Monfils — in his farewell ATP Tour season — charmed a packed Grandstand crowd with a 6–4, 7–6(5) win over Damir Dzumhur. Frances Tiafoe also progressed, beating Nuno Borges 6–4, 6–4 for his first Top 50 win since last August. Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro caused another upset, defeating Adrian Mannarino 6–3, 6–4 to set up a Round of 16 clash with Wu.
