Brazilian Army’s Strategic Defense Upgrades

The Brazilian Army (EB) is bolstering its armored capabilities through strategic agreements with Iveco Defense Vehicles (IDV) and its partners.

These efforts are integral to Brazil’s long-term military modernization plans and national defense enhancement.

Key Developments in Armored Vehicle Acquisitions

1. Centauro II 8×8 Acquisition Project:

In November 2022, the Brazilian Army chose the Centauro II tank destroyer for its medium cavalry armored combat vehicle project (VBC Cav-MSR 8×8).

Developed by the consortium Iveco-Oto Melara (CIO), this vehicle features a 120 mm, 45-caliber cannon. It surpassed competitors like the LAV 700 AG and ST1-BR.

A contract was signed in December 2022 for the delivery of two prototypes within 48 months for testing in Brazil. The consortium will supply 98 armored vehicles by 2038.

  • The first prototype is set to arrive in Brazil soon, overcoming delays in Hamburg, Germany.
  • The second prototype remains in Italy for further evaluation before shipment.

2. LMV-BR 2 Vehicle Supply Contract:

The EB has signed a contract with IDV for the supply of 420 LMV-BR 2 vehicles, locally named Guaicurus.

These vehicles will produce two versions: one with a Manual Weapon System and the other with a Remote-Controlled Weapon System. All units will include a Command and Control System (C2).

Additionally, production will occur at the IDV facility in Sete Lagoas (MG), with deliveries over a 10-year period starting in 2026.

Strategic Impact and Long-term Commitments

These initiatives are part of the Army’s Strategic Program of Armored Forces (Prg EE F Bld), which extends until 2040 and aligns with Brazil’s Growth Acceleration Program (New PAC).

The program’s total cost is estimated at over BRL 30 billion (approximately USD 5.49 billion).

A Task Force has been established to negotiate a compensation agreement under the ordinance EME/C Ex Nº 1.341/2024.

However, this reflects the Army’s commitment to transparent and beneficial procurement processes.

This task force will report proposals, challenges, and lessons learned within 30 days of concluding negotiations.

Reinforcement of the Defense Industrial Base

The partnership between the Brazilian Army and IDV includes the supply of over 700 units of the 6×6 Guarani Amphibious Armored Vehicle and 32 units of the LMV-BR.

This collaboration underscores the strategic importance of local production and technological advancements in military operations.

In addition, it includes special operations and peacekeeping missions.

These acquisitions and partnerships reflect the Brazilian Army’s proactive approach to upgrading its defense capabilities and fostering a robust domestic defense industry.

In short, this strategy ensures operational readiness and strategic autonomy, crucial for national security and regional stability.
